The Oklahoma and Tulsa health department announced state and county health officials have found numerous health code violations at the clinic of Dr. W. Scott Harrington. Patients may have been exposed to Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV and are urged to get tested immediately.

Dr. W. Scott Harrington, a dentist, is being called “a menace to public health” as the discovery that approximately 7,000 patients are at risk of infection is revealed. The agencies found Oklahoma Dental act violations and health and safety violations, including the use of dirty and rusty equipment, reusing needles and administering drugs without a license.

Susan Rogers, the Executive Director of the State Board of Dentistry, said, “This is an unprecedented event. To my knowledge, this has never happened before as far as a public notification of a hepatitis c case involving a dental office.”

The Oklahoma Board of Dentistry reports that inspectors found the dental office to use instruments on patients that carry infectious diseases and reuse the instruments on other patients. Officials are sending letters to the assumed 7,000 patients of Dr. Harrington, who has been practicing for 36 years, but are unable to confirm and inform patients before 2007.

The dentist is also accused of allowing assistants to practice dentistry without proper licensing.

He was not available for comments.
