split screen of b scottWhile BET is riding a wave of success with their new hit show “Being Mary Jane,” there is a dark cloud looming over the company in the form of a lawsuit from transgender blogger B. Scott. Things just got a little worse for the media company because employee emails have leaked and they show the executives wanted to censor B. Scott’s look on the red carpet of the 2013 BET Awards.

In case you forgot, transgender blogger B. Scott was asked to be an award show red carpet correspondent for the BET Awards. In the first segment, Scott was dressed in a free flowing tunic with long hair and a face full of make up. During the commercial break, BET producers asked B. Scott to change his clothes so he looked more manly. Naturally, B. Scott didn’t react well, but did return in a blazer, make up removed, and hair pulled back. After the awards show, B. Scott put the network on blast in a blog post and filed a lawsuit against the company.

The company tried to spin it, but nobody was buying their story of B. Scott running late. Now, everyone’s skepticism was proved true because an email from BET executive Stephen G. Hill saying, ““I don’t want ‘looking like a woman B Scott.’  I want tempered B Scott.”

After Scott was informed he would need to change his clothes, a producer named Stephanie Hodges sent an email admitting, “He got upset and said he was going to blow this sh*t up and call GLAAD.”

Knowing that scandal was on the horizon, BET executive Michelle Ware wrote in an email, ““The spin should be he was late for a live show and subsequently replaced and it would have been awkward in a live show to have the person assuming his role removed and him inserted. Unless we can make public the reason we didn’t want him dressed the way he normally does, I would stay away from suits, suit selections, etc.”

I hope BET has their check book ready because this is going to cost them a pretty penny.
