MJB took to her Twitter account to vent her frustrations over being overlooked for an Academy Award nomination for her song from the movie “The Help.”

The Academy Award nominations were announced yesterday and ‘The Help’ is one of the leading films with mentions in Best Picture, Best Actress in a Leading Role (Viola Davis) and Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Octavia Spencer & Jessica Chastain). Many people were happy to see more color in the Oscar categories, however, it was surprising that Mary J, Blige’s ‘The Living Proof,’ the original song from ‘The Help,’ wasn’t included in the list of nominees for Best Original Song.

The problem wasn’t just that she didn’t get nominated, lots of artists miss out on an Oscar nod. The real problem is that the category she would’ve been nominated in only used 2 of the 5 spots — meaning that there were 3 open spots for more nominees but for whatever reason they just weren’t used. Not only did Mary feel snubbed, she felt downright ignored and she took to her Twitter to post and retweet fans who were outraged as well:

“I’m so thankful for true fans like you all. It saddens me & feels like the Academy is being mean. 2 only nominate 2 of the 5 slots is…….”

Retweets

“@maryjblige Not mean Mary they are being racist..They really don’t want to acknowledge “US’ but great work is simply great work they have to”

“@MaryJBlige With Each Tear, There’s A Lesson….U Kno The Rest. Thank U For Living Proof, Their Mistake.” #mjbnom

“Even though @maryjblige didn’t get oscar nominated your work has prove to your fans you are “The Living Proof” your day will surely come”

Mary also tweeted a HitFix.com article titled ‘What do Oscar voters have against music?’ where the writer calls it an “insult” for the Academy to disregard the hard work of contemporary artists who follow the rules and make the grade.

Why do the Oscar voters hate songs so much?  Once again, the music branch has shown utter contempt for contemporary songwriters as they nominated only two tunes in the best original song category out of the 39 deemed eligible. What an insult.

The Original song category is looking like the Female Rap category at the BET Awards with only two songs of relevance (well…period) being nominated. The songs were ‘Real in Rio’ from the animated movie ‘Rio’ and ‘Man or Muppet’ from ‘The Muppets.’

Although Mary was snubbed by the Oscars this year, her song was recognized and nominated by the Golden Globes in the Best Original Song category.
