Blige became the butt of many jokes and negative criticism after Burger King uploaded a commercial to their youtube page featuring Mary singing her heart out over some chicken wraps. Most of her fans were wondering why in the world their beloved Mary, an icon, was on their screens singing about some chicken, however, if the rumors are true, she was paid 2 milli for that spot. In the commercial, the Queen of Hip-Hop/Soul was portrayed as a chicken wrap enthusiast who, when prompted, could sing an original chicken wrap jingle. Critics of the ad felt as though it promoted racial stereotypes, while labeling it ‘buffoonery’, and the ad received such a negative response that BK had no choice but to pull the ad down, hours later, with no immediate explanation.
