nick-cannon whiteface

I hope Mariah’s money is as long as it appears. Nick should too, because this brotha’s stock will be on a steep decline after his latest publicity stunt.

Nick Cannon is out promoting his latest album, “White People Party Music,” which is set to hit stores on April 1.  It appears that his marketing campaign puts the ‘FOOL’ in “April Fool’s Day,” as he decided to  pique our interest by dressing in whiteface and creating a new persona named “Connor Smallnut.”  He then promotes this alter ego on Instagram with the following message:

“It’s official… I’m White!!! #WHITEPEOPLEPARTYMUSIC #Wppm in stores April 1st!!!!!!Dude Go Get It!!!Join The Party!!!! #GoodCredit #DogKissing #BeerPong #FarmersMarkets #FistPumping #CreamCheeseEating #RacialDraft “Bro I got drafted!!”

Dude, WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?!?!?!?!?!

I know in this day and age of “here today, gone tomorrow,” artists have to think outside the box in order to get and keep their fans’ attention.  Beyonce’s secret album release employed Navy Seal tactics to unveil, and Lady Gaga has built her entire career off of gimmicks that used to get our tongues wagging.  This stunt right here, though?  Reeks of irresponsibility.  I am not certain of the demographics of the “America’s Got Talent” host’s fan base, but his antics are detrimental at a crucial time where this country is boldly losing the war against racism.

Although race is a major focus in the topics on my radio show and blogs, I don’t get bent out of shape every time an infraction occurs.  In this case, however, with the recent court rulings in the Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis cases, Cannon’s exploits are done in poor taste.  Both murderers, Zimmerman and Dunn, chose to escalate a harmless situation based off of stereotypes that they’ve seen played out over and over in the media.  The majority of the African-American community has stood firm that these stereotypes are one of the main reasons those men felt confident in their choices to kill defenseless children.  As a result, some of us demand these stereotypes cease because of their harmful contributions in the long run.  So, why should it be any different for another race?

Cannon’s posts accompanied by such distasteful hashtags not only stereotype white people, but also insinuates that blacks don’t fit certain profiles. (Pardon me, but my credit is good, I love a nice traipse through the local farmers’ market and the more cream cheese, the better.)  Guess what?  Now, it only fuels the fire for some white people to “have the right.”  You know, “have the right” to wear black face at frat parties, “have the right” to laugh even harder than we do at certain comedy sketches, “have the right” to say THAT WORD with more freedom.  All the while, the merry-go-round of underlined hate and bigotry just keeps spinning, leaving us in last place as a people trying to get ahead.

Shame on you, Nick.  Mariah, come get your husband.
