SAUDI-US-ROYALS-DIPLOMACY-OBAMA-SALMAN

First Lady Michelle Obama found herself in a little bit of hot water with Saudi Arabian Twitter users during her visit to their country on Tuesday for not having her head covered. According to The Washington Post, over 1500 tweets used the hashtag, #ميشيل_أوباما_سفور which translated means, #Michelle_Obama_unveiled, where they criticized her for not donning a veil or headscarf. Saudi Arabia is one of the few countries in the world that requires women to have their heads covered, along with wearing black robes that covers them from head to toe. The First Lady along with President Barack Obama stopped over in Saudi Arabia for a quick visit from their trip to India in order to pay their respects to the late Saudi King Abdullah.

Many Twitter users did point out while Michelle and the president were travelling in Indonesia, she opted to wear a headscarf but didn’t understand why it wasn’t done in Saudi Arabia. The country’s strict dress code is not enforced on those visiting Saudi Arabia and another former first lady did opt out of the attire as well. In 2006 former FLOTUS Laura Bush didn’t have her head covered when traveled to the country and met with Abdullah. The Ahram Online defended Michelle’s attire from critics since it was well documented the visit was an impromptu trip. Do you think the First Lady not covering her head was wrong?
