“Kendrick Lamar responds to Fox News pundit Geraldo Rivera’s criticism of his “Alright” performance at the BET Awards.

Kendrick took to TMZ Live today to react to criticism from Fox News pundit Geraldo Rivera in regards to his performance at Sunday’s BET Awards. After Kendrick opened the ceremony by rapping “Alright” from atop a police car, Rivera remarked, “this is why I say that hip hop has done more damage to young African-Americans than racism in recent years.”

Lamar responded with his usual eloquence, grace, and conviction:

This is our music. This is us expressing ourselves. Rather [than] going out here and doing the murders myself, I want to express myself in a positive light the same way other artists are doing. Not going out in the streets, go in the booth and talking about the situation and hoping these kids can find some type of influence on it in a positive manner. Coming from these streets and coming from these neighborhoods, we’re taking our talents and putting ’em inside the studio.”

He also expressed disappointment that Rivera zeroed in on his “and we hate po-po” line and took it out of context.

Maybe if Rivera watches Kendrick’s new “Alright” video (see below) , he’ll see the light.”
