Drake has responded to Meek Mill‘s accusations that the Toronto rapper employs a ghostwriter with “Charged Up,” a new diss track that Drake premiered Saturday on his Beats 1’s show OVO Sound Radio. “I stay silent ’cause we’re at war and I’m very patient / 6 God is watching / I just hope you’re prepared to face him / I’m charged up,” Drake warns on the surprisingly mellow Meek Mill response track. “Wow, I’m honored you think this is staged / I’m flattered, man / In fact, I’m amazed.”
On Tuesday, Meek Mill ignited a firestorm when he tweeted, “Stop comparing drake to me too…. He don’t write his own raps! That’s why he ain’t tweet my album because we found out!” New York DJ Funkmaster Flex and rapper OG Maco then backed Meek Mill’s claims, saying that an Atlanta rapper named Quentin Miller was Drake’s ghostwriter as evidenced by some If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late album credits. Both Miller and Drake’s longtime collaborator Noah “40” Shebib, who produced “Charged Up,” denied that the Toronto rapper didn’t write his own verses. (“I am not and never will be a ‘ghostwriter’ for Drake,” Miller wrote on his Tumblr.)
“I seen it all coming / Knew they were pushing buttons / Easter egg hunting / They gotta look for something / Done doing favors for people / ‘Cause it ain’t like I need the money I make off a feature,” Drake says on “Charged Up.” The rapper previously appeared on Meek Mill’s 2012 single “Amen” as well as “R.I.C.O.,” a track off 2015’s Dreams Worth More Than Money. It is Drake’s appearance on the latter track that sparked the ghostwriting controversy. “He ain’t even write that verse on my album and if I woulda knew I woulda took it off my album,” Meek Mill tweeted on July 21st.
“Cops are killing people with their arms up / And your main focus is trying to harm us? / And you think you about to starve us,” Drake says in conclusion. “I’m charged up.” Drake also makes a sly remark seemingly directed at Meek Mill’s girlfriend and Drake’s Young Money cohort Nicki Minaj. “Rumor has it I either fucked her or never could / But ‘rumor has it’ hasn’t done you niggas any good.”
After “Charged Up” premiered, Meek Mill turned to Twitter to share his thoughts on the track. “Baby lotion soft,” Mill tweeted. “I can tell he wrote that 1 tho…”
Drake’s latest OVO Sound Radio episode also featured two more new cuts: “Right Hand” and “You Used To,” which is a remix of the D.R.A.M. single “Cha Cha” featuring Drake.
