SAN BERNARDINO, CA (RNN) –  After a high-speed chase and a long gunfight, one mass-shooting suspect is dead and another is injured and police are searching for a possible third person who got out of the SUV and ran. Police recovered AR-15 style long guns and a pipe bomb from the vehicle.

The Chevy SUV matched the description witnesses gave of a getaway vehicle that three suspects used to flee the scene of the Wednesday morning mass shooting that left at least 14 dead and about 17 wounded. Five victims are being treated at Loma Linda University Medical Center.

A few hours later, law enforcement units were in hot pursuit of the vehicle when police said somebody started firing at them with a rifle out the back window of the SUV. The suspects also threw items out of the vehicle including pipe bombs. Police returned fire, riddled the vehicle with multiple rounds, and it came to a stop in the eastbound lane of San Bernardino Avenue surrounded by officers with weapons drawn.

After SWAT controlled the scene, officers began the process of removing the wounded man from the back seat. He tumbled out of the back seat into the street, apparently gravely wounded and perhaps dead.

One officer was injured in the exchange of fire with the suspects and sustained non-life-threatening injuries, said Sgt. Vicki Cervantes. She held a short news briefing at 4 p.m. California time, but had little information even when pressed on whether the suspects were dead and any possible motives.

The suspect who is down in the westbound lane of San Bernardino Avenue has been reported to be dead by CNN. A rifle was lying a few feet away from the body, which lay in a pool of blood. According to scanner traffic, police were about to corner the third man who fled on foot.

About an hour earlier, police said upwards of 14 people were killed and at least 14 wounded Wednesday in a shooting at a community and social services center. The shooter or shooters remain on the loose.
