Six students at Desert Vista High School in suburban Phoenix were suspended after using gold tape to spell their slur with two letters marked out with asterisks during senior picture day on Friday.

Desert Vista was still reeling from the photo’s fallout on Monday, with groups such as the Black Student Union saying that the picture does represent their school.

School officials and social media users around the world said they were “outraged” by the glib use of the hateful word, though others are calling for harsher punishment.

The suspended girls said that the photo was originally intended for the boyfriend of one of the girls, who is black.
