For those who aren’t sports fanatics, the reason they tune into the Super Bowl is for the commercials. The ads were a little weak this year, which made it easy to pick favorites. The Urban Daily decided to highlight five of the best commercials of the 2012 Super Bowl. Sorry, ladies, David Beckham’s H&M ad did not make this list. I feel like I need to throw a “pause” somewhere in here for even mentioning it.

It’s a brand new day for Viola Davis. The Oscar-nominated actress gives good face on the cover of this week’s L.A. Times Magazine–with a fierce ‘fro! In the interview Davis discusses her long climb to fame and success:

“That really is our plight, especially as women of color,” she says. “You can have all the training in the world, come from a respectable background and yet never get that big opportunity that breaks you out—never.”

No it’s not a useless number, there’s a meaning to it. It’s not the amount of sleeveless hoodies Bill Belichick has worn in the last year. It’s not the amount of women Tom Brady has dated in his lifetime. There is all time history behind it. It stands for the most wins of a quarterback and coach in NFL history. The incredible number belongs to the three- time super bowl champions Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, the most dominating coach-player duo in NFL history. That number is the result of countless film sessions, preparation, attention to detail, and outstanding game planning.

If you were to follow Tom Brady from his combine showing to draft day no one on earth would’ve thought he would end up being the man he is today. He was a 6th round pick, the 199th overall in the 2000 draft. He was looked at as a backup, maybe a starter with some improvement or stability, but nobody thought he’d end up being a Hall of fame quarterback. I hate sports cliché’s because of the corniness but they do tend to be true, especially in this case. He probably has had the biggest draft day “chip on his shoulder” in NFL history, for being drafted so late. So what has got Brady this far? Well a couple of things, his accuracy, his consistency, his practice and preparation, but most importantly it’s his competitiveness. He is insanely competitive, the most recent showing of this was a regular season game this season when Brady threw a interception and got into one of the most heated arguments you’ll ever see with his quarterback coach. (See here) That’s what separates him from an average player or even a great player, and elevates him to one of the greatest. He wants to be great he doesn’t shy away from it he attacks it like a challenge.

So now, 12 years after his draft day and with enough records to split in half with a ‘bust’ like Ryan leaf and still make him a Hall of Famer, Tom Brady finds himself in his 5th Super Bowl, which yes, you guessed it is another record. There is a wild twist to this one, this is (although not fully) the same team that denied him perfection. He faced the giants in the Super Bowl 5 years ago…his only loss on the big stage. He had arguably the greatest season for a quarterback ever with 50 touchdowns. Swept the regular season putting up crazy madden numbers scoring 40, and 50 on teams left and right. He made it all the way to the super bowl only to lose on a game winning drive to Eli manning and the Giants. Anybody who thinks Tom Brady, the competitive freak that he is doesn’t want to get revenge on the Giants and is just dumb. He can’t wait, like a kid who stays up until midnight on Christmas to open their presents. Guess who’s in his corner; his coach, the Genius, Bill Belichick, the man he’s been through numerous wars with over the last 12 years, and walked away with 124 Dubs in those battles. It’s pretty hard to bet against those two, dontcha think??

Besides bring a Grammy winning R&B superstar, John Legend is a huge sports fan. He made an appearance on First Take where he sang a parody of his signature ballad, “Ordinary People.” Legend changed the lyrics to reference Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith’s constant debates about Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow. John Legend basically said everything sports fans were thinking. Yes, Tebow’s wins come out of nowhere, but we don’t want to hear about that on every show. There are other players, like the ones who made it to the Super Bowl.

Simon Cowell doesn’t play when it comes to business. When it comes to the American version of The X Factor, that has become the hard truth. After firing stale host, Steve Jones, Cowell has given Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger their walking papers.

According to reports, Cowell felt the former Pussycat Doll “lacked personality” for American television. Simon’s reasons for axing his friend, Paula Abdul because of the cold response she got from audiences.

As for L.A. Reid, he will remain judge. Reid has become Cowell’s biggest adversary when it comes to critiques. L.A. Reid being head honcho of Epic Records, the label to sign the winner to a five million dollar contract doesn’t hurt either.

EPIC! Chris Rock & Dave Chappelle Planning Comedy Tour?

Chris Rock was inspired by Jay-Z and Kanye West coming together for “Watch The Throne,” and wants to bring the comedy equivalent to the world by going on tour with Dave Chappelle. Chris Rock recently stated:

“I’ve been talking to Chappelle a lot. Been trying to get Chappelle to go on tour. You know I’m not the hard one laughing. But I’m trying to make that happen. After seeing Kanye and Jay-Z, I was like, ‘Me and Dave should do this.’”

Fired The Re-Hired? Star Jones Is Coming Back To “The View” After Going In On Barbara Walters?!

After getting fired from her job as a co-host on ABC’s “The View” in 2006, Star Jones will be returning to the daytime show on February 22nd. She’ll only be on for the day as a guest to promote heart disease awareness among women.

Star Jones reportedly fell out with “The View” co-host and producer Barbara Walters, which led to her contract not being renewed by ABC. But Star Jones blindsided Barbara by making an announcement about not returning to “The View” before her then-current contract had actually ended.
