Green Bay Packers linebacker Erik Walden has been arrested and is still in jail after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, leaving her in need of medical attention.
Police were called at around 6 a.m. on Friday after she was treated at a local hospital for a cut and bump on her head and an injured right hand.
The incident allegedly occurred several hours earlier at the home of the couple, who have two children together, in Lawrence, Wisconsin.
26 year old Walden, was arrested shortly after and, with the courts closed for the Thanksgiving holiday, will remain in the Brown County jail until at least Monday.
Following the arrest, Walden’s girlfriend claimed the incident was a misunderstanding. Instead, she claimed the pair had been arguing when she tripped and hit her head on the bed. She said it was hospital staff who alerted police. Hmmm….
But local police chief Randy Bani said the woman involved had called authorities around 6.30 a.m. The arrest came just hours after Walden’s team was victorious on Thanksgiving day against the Detroit Lions.
A rep for the Packers released a statement saying: ‘The Packers organization is aware of the situation involving Erik Walden. ‘We are in the process of gathering more information and will refrain from making any further comment.’
It is uncertain whether Walden, who is in his fourth NFL season, could be suspended from games following the incident. Walden has started all 11 games for the Packers this season.
The team obtained him during the middle of the 2010 season and he became a central part of the defense on the way to the Super Bowl championship.
