A recently released cover of Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” by D’Angelo has got everyone all grooving and excited, including yours truly, with thoughts that another D’Angelo album would be dropping any day now. However, ?uestlove (of The Roots crew), who originally tweeted the song, said that the cover is actually 8 years old. And that I, and everyone else impatiently awaiting, will have to spin his old stuff just a minute longer before his new album dropped. He also said that the album, tentatively called James River, is 97 percent done (what does that translate into anyway – a few extra ooohs and aaahs?).

So while we wait for D’Angelo’s long overdue return to music, which has been promised to us for two years now, I thought I’d speculate about whether or not he could make a comeback. And I don’t mean can he come back, drop an album and do relatively well sales-wise. But will we still receive him musically without the added status as a sex symbol? It’s been 12 years since the cornrowed, gapped tooth, falsetto followed up his award winning debut album Brown Sugar with highly praised second album Voodoo. When he released his first album, D’Angelo was a pudgy piano player preaching to our souls with song such as Those Dreamin’ Eyes of Mines, Lady and When We Get By. That album was an instant classic and served as a breath of fresh air among the other producer driven R&B-Pop acts, which was dominating music at the time. He was also one of the founding members of the neo soul genre, which was a throwback to black soul, blues and jazz music artist of earlier decades.
Despite the relative success of Brown Sugar, it would take his second album Voodoo to propel his career beyond the limited audience that a neo-soul genre could provide him. Although music-wise, the album was just as dope as his first offering, the record buying audience was slow to catch on to this new experimental side of D’Angelo. That was until he dropped some weight, beefed up and had his chiseled naked body sensually asking us “How Does it Feel?” That video had all the ladies standing extra close to the television, trying magically to peer down below the TV pane and all their jealous, hating-ass boyfriends responding, “put some damn clothes on!” Read on here MadameNoire.com

D’Angelo is reportedly preparing to make a comeback, and we have this new music leak of him remaking “Black Hole Sun” by Soundgarden. This song is said to have been recorded in 2010, and it is not known if it will appear on D’Angelo’s third album, which may be released this year.

D’ Angelo Returns to Studio for New Album

Grammy-winner and neo-soul icon D’Angelo earned a reputation for being as troubled as he is brilliant after disappearing from the music scene following his 2000 smash Voodoo. But word has it the reclusive singer is back in the studio working on his third album.

Taking to Twitter, The Roots drummer and producer ?uestlove spilled the beans.

“Most people use midnight as a time to sleep. others are working on their 11 year followup. this of course being hour number one,” he tweeted.

D’Angelo’s highly anticipated Voodoo follow-up, once tentatively titled James River, has endured a number of set-backs and delays over the years. The “Brown Sugar” singer has been arrested for drug possession and solicitation and at one point survived a serious car crash.

According to ?uestlove, he, bassist Pino Palladino and producer/engineer Russel Elevado were in session working on the new album. Previously, producer Mark Ronson, Prince, Raphael Saadiq, John Mayer and others have been rumored as collaborators, but there’s no way of knowing what will make the final cut.

Billboard.com cites a source who claims J Records is planning to release the album in late 2011 or early 2012.

D’Angelo Back in the Studio Recording New Album

It seems as though D’Angelo has returned to the studio to work on a new album.

According to Billboard.com, a studio session took place in New York late last night with two longtime D’Angelo collaborators, Roots drummer Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and bassist Pino Palladino, as well as producer/engineer Russell Elevado, according to posts from Questlove on Twitter.

“Most people use midnight as a time to sleep. others are working on their 11 year followup. this of course being hour number one,” tweeted the drummer.

The album, which was at one point provisionally titled “James River,” is being eyed for release before the end of the year through J Records, according to a Billboard source. It will be D’Angelo’s follow-up to the 2000 album “Voodoo,” which won the 2001 Grammy for best R&B album and has sold 1.7 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Questlove and Palladino later backed D’Angelo on an acclaimed tour in support of the album.

Billboard reports:

The new project has been plagued by long breaks in recording and other delays, and many collaborators have come and gone. Last year, producer Mark Ronson told Billboard.com he was about to hit the studio with D’Angelo, but it is unknown if any of his work will make the final cut. Prince, Raphael Saadiq, John Mayer, Cee Lo Green and Roy Hargrove have also been mentioned as contributors at various times during the process.

Since the release of “Voodoo,” D’Angelo has endured a serious car accident and arrests for drug possession and solicitation. In lieu of new music of his own, he’s made sporadic guest appearances on albums by Ronson, Common, Snoop Dogg, Q-Tip and the late J Dilla. His last release under his own name was the 2008 Virgin compilation “The Best So Far,” which rounds up highlights from “Voodoo” and its 1995 predecessor “Brown Sugar,” along with soundtrack contributions.

?uestlove has revealed that after eleven years, he has returned to the studio as a drummer for D’Angelo. The pair have had a rocky personal and musical relationship ever since the end of D’Angelo’s “Voodoo” tour in 2000.

“Entered the studio with Michael D’Angelo Archer & [Voodoo bassist] Pino Pallidno for the first time in 11 years, and it is magic,” ?uestlove wrote on his Facebook page early yesterday morning.

The Facebook status update received some hilarious commentary from some of ?uesto’s friends. “Yeah right,” wrote comedian Chris Rock. “Let me guess. Dave Chappelle and Lauryn [Hill] just stopped by.”

D’Angelo, born Michael Eugene Archer, appeared in a Manhattan court room today to enter the plea to a lesser charge of disorderly conduct.

Prosecutors say that D’Angelo’s offense was a violation and not a crime and that the star satisfied their conditions. No details about the deal they worked out have been released though.

If the prosecutors were smart, they would’ve included a stipulation that demanded an album from the reclusive R&B singer who last released an album in 2000.

Producer Mark Ronson recalled recording with D’Angelo during a heatwave this summer in Brooklyn on tracks for both D’Angelo’s upcoming album as well as Ronson’s own Record Collection album.
