The Urban Daily caught up with Genaro Patterson who is the author of the book, Promise: Never Make A Promise You Can’t Keep. The novel is in the street literature genre and focuses on the perils of life in the drug game in Sacramento, California. The book is based on Patterson’s experiences in the street life. He was sentenced to 121 months for cocaine possession, with the intent to distribute in 1997. He was also an artist on Death Row Records, however, he never released an album due to Death Row losing their distribution deal. So who better than to comment on the legal struggles of today’s hip-hop stars? Here’s what Genaro Patterson had to say about Hip-Hop behind bars in 2011:

“Wow! That’s crazy! I can’t really agree with nothing like that. That’s terrible. When you get in that celebrity limelight, we really have to protect ourselves, especially if we have ways that aren’t normal. We really have to be careful.”

Loon, Felicia “Snoop” Pearson (The Wire), Jermaine Hopkins (Lean On Me), and Jimmy Henchman were all cuffed for separately trafficking various drugs including marijuana, cocaine, and heroin:

“The drug life is not a game. When you get into this life, you don’t know exactly what you’re getting into. Your thinking will surely change and it will go in a more negative direction. When your thinking becomes negative, you will get a negative outcome. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been famous or not.”

Tone Loc, Gucci Mane, Funk Master Flex, Big Sean were locked up for putting their hands on women:

“I think that’s terrible. I would never put my hands on a woman. Any man that puts his hands on a woman is hella weak. I think hitting a woman is retarded. I’ve  seen men roughing  women up on the street and have  interrupted the situation.”

Machine Gun Kelly, Big Boi, Rick Ross, Soulja Boy, Frank Ocean, T.I., 40 Glocc, Juvenile, Waka Flocka, Webbie all being arrested for drug possession:

“I think marijuana hasn’t become legal because the government hasn’t figured out a way to tax it. The government knows its not a drug that makes you go rob people. Actually, it calms you down. It’s grown from the earth. I don’t consider marijuana a real drug.”

Ja Rule, Memphitz,  Young Buck catching gun charges:

“If you live that rough lifestyle, it’s safer to have a weapon than to be caught without one. Compared to others, that’s not really a bad charge. However, if you get caught on the street without a gun, you could lose your life. If you’re not involved with that lifestyle, obviously you don’t need a weapon. My book shows you all of the highs and lows you might face living that gangster  lifestyle.”

BG, born Christopher Dorsey, was arrested in November of 2009, after police stopped him in a stolen Chevy Tahoe on November.

A search of the vehicle uncovered three guns and two loaded magazines and two extended clips, resulting in charges for BG and the vehicle’s two other occupants.

In May of 2011, prosecutors charged BG, Fedison and a third man named Demounde Pollard, with conspiracy.

Earlier this week one of the three men, 29-year-old Jerod Fedison, was sentenced to 22 years in prison for the incident.

BG and Fedison are accused of attempting to coerce Pollard into taking the blame for possession of all three guns.

Of the three men, Pollard, who was 17 at the time of his arrest, was the only one without a criminal record.

Prosecutors claim they caught Fedison on a recorded call from prison, instructing Pollard’s girlfriend to take the charges the importance of the issue.

Pollard eventually agreed to take the charges, but he later began cooperating with authorities.

He is currently serving 30 months in prison.

BG is a convicted felon who has been arrested multiple times over the years.

The rapper, who has a lenghy rap sheet for drugs and other charges, will stand trial on December 12.

BG has pleaded not guilty. If he is convicted he faces up to 10 years in prison.

We aren’t supposed to wish anyone ill will, but when it comes to the folks that have been raping and stealing and murdering our loved ones…well, we reserve the right to make an exception. Two young women thought they’d beat a little girl to death and get away with it, but they were in error. The judge slammed them to the ground with a life sentence.

According to the Daily Mail, the two women beat a 3-year old girl, Serenity Richardson, to death for peeing on the floor. They took a belt and a metal hanger and beat her entire body, except the bottoms of her feet; they were the only thing on her body left unscathed.
The judge told Erica Mae Butts and Shanita Latrice Cunningham, both 25, that the noises that the child must have made during the beating and how they could beat her through her screams was more than “disconcerting.” She then awarded the two with life with ease…as she should have.
But then the two of them–and someone in the courtroom believed to be Butts’ mother that had to be removed because of all her screaming–lost it. One of them started hyperventilating and the other just completely collapsed. Check it out.

Man intimidated students into giving him money.

The streets of Athens, Georgia are a little bit safer now that 21-year old Germil Deun Johnson is behind bars.

For two days earlier this February, Johnson wreaked havoc, robbing three University of Georgia students and attempting to rob a fourth. But he didn’t use weapons in the robberies (he is homeless you know). No, he just demanded money, loudly.

He threatened to hurt his first victim if she didn’t give him some money. She gave him $11. The next day he did the same to another female student and she gave him $1. Figuring that wasn’t enough, Johnson then demanded money from another man who was walking towards him (while he was still robbing the woman) and got him for $9.

With his two-day earnings now at a whopping $20, Johnson decided to hit one last lick an hour later. He spotted a woman talking on her cell phone, ran up on her and demanded that she end her conversation, hang up and give him some money. When she said she didn’t have any, Johnson felt lied to and was insulted. To teach her a lesson, Johnson tackled the woman, punched her in the stomach and tried to steal her phone.

When another man drove by and tried to investigate what was going on, Johnson fled and tried to board a public transportation bus. Police nabbed him before he could get away.

Police nor local papers have released any other information on Johnson other than that he was a registered sex offender for a statutory rape case in 2009. But judging from his get money tactics, he probably should have tried filling out an application at a collections agency. Seems like when it comes to collecting funds, this man is all about results.

At least that’s how the Connecticut Department of Correction feels, as they announced a ban on pornography beginning next summer. The department announced in July that prisoners had one year to dispose of pornographic materials containing “pictorial depictions of sexual activity or nudity,” giving them enough time for magazine subscriptions to expire.

However, it seems many inmates disagree with the decision and have begun a letter-writing campaign that urging officials to reconsider the decision. According to the Associated Press, prior to the ban, inmates were allowed pornographic material excluding content that depicted children, bestiality, sadomasochism or the use of force.

The AP reports that inmates have sent close to three dozen letters to officials. Some letters have offered alternative solutions such as providing “cable programming that offers and displays nudity, also sexual activity.”

The initial ban was intended to improve the work conditions for prison guards, especially female members, not forcing them to be exposed to the questionable material on a daily basis. According to the Daily News, prison officials also acknowledge that the ban is intended for the prisoners’ own good, a point some disagree with (as you can see in the video below).

While many of the prisoners writing in are citing their First Amendment rights, it seems unlikely they will have much of a case legally. The Daily News explains that in the past, courts have sided with the prisons.

Connecticut however, isn’t the only state to ban porn in jail. In July a Michigan man actually sued the state after guards denied his request for pornographic materials, claiming he was subjected to a “poor standard of living” and “sexual and sensory deprivation.”

Texas Prisons: No Lunch on Saturday and Sunday

In what was labeled as a cost-cutting move, since April, some Texas prisons have stopped providing inmates with lunch on the weekend.

By not feeding inmates three meals a day on Saturday and Sunday, the Texas prison system thinks it will save upward of $2.8 million. Other ways the Texas Department of Criminal Justice plans to cut cost include replacing carton milk with a powder substitute and using regular bread for hamburger and hot dog buns, according to a report by the New York Times.

Last month Texas officials also did away with the age-old practice of providing inmates that are about to be executed with a last meal.

Ohio State University law professor and civil rights activist Michelle Alexander highlighted the troubling statistic while speaking in front of an audience at the Pasadena Branch of the American Civil Liberties Union, Elev8 reports.

Alexander, the author of “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness,” reportedly claimed there are more African American men in prison and jail, or on probation and parole, than were slaves before the start of the Civil War.

More than 846,000 black men were incarcerated in 2008, according to U.S. Bureau of Justice estimates reported by NewsOne. African Americans make up 13.6 percent of the U.S. population according to census data, but black men reportedly make up 40.2 percent of all prison inmates.

The criminal justice system is the newest in a long line of societal structures that have disenfranchised people of color, Alexander argues in her book, according to ColorLines.

In an excerpt from her book published on her website, Alexander writes that despite today’s belief in “colorblindness,” our criminal justice system effectively bars African American men from citizenship, treating them as a separate caste:

Denying African Americans citizenship was deemed essential to the formation of the original union. Hundreds of years later, America is still not an egalitarian democracy. The arguments and rationalizations that have been trotted out in support of racial exclusion and discrimination in its various forms have changed and evolved, but the outcome has remained largely the same.

More African American men were disenfranchised due to felony convictions in 2004 than in 1870, “the year the Fifteenth Amendment was ratified prohibiting laws that explicitly deny the right to vote on the basis of race,” she wrote in a Huffington Post blog published last year.

Although crime rates have dipped in recent years, the number of African American men who are incarcerated has surged, mainly due to a single law enforcement policy, Alexander contends.

“Most of that increase is due to the War on Drugs, a war waged almost exclusively in poor communities of color,” she said in the Pasadena lecture, according to LA Progressive.

That crime-fighting measure “is a big part of the reason that a black child born today is less likely to be raised by both parents than a black child born during slavery,

(AllHipHop News) The brother of incarcerated Hip-Hop mogul James “Jimmy Henchman” Rosemond was sentenced to 12 years in prison yesterday (October 6th), for his role in a massive cocaine distribution operation that raked in more than $10,000,000 per year.

Jimmy Henchman’s older brother Kesnar Rosemond, 50, was sentenced to lengthy prison sentence for cocaine distribution, wire fraud and identity theft related charges, according to the New York Post.

Kesnar Rosemond had already pleaded guilty to the charges in hopes of a reduced sentenced, but he was given the stiff sentence for the severity of the charges against him.

Prosecutors claim that Kesnar Rosemond used an unnamed New York auto dealership to steal loan applications to use the information to open fake accounts, using FedEx and other shipping companies, to send millions of dollars in drugs and cocaine across the country.

The tactic opened numerous innocent people up for investigation and interrogation and added to the complexity of the brother’s scheme, according to prosecutors.

The feds claim Kesnar’s younger brother James “Jimmy Henchman” Rosemond operated his management company CZAR Entertainment as a front for a Continuous Criminal Enterprise (CCE).

Jimmy Henchman is accused of using his business to send hundreds of kilos of cocaine in cases used for music equipment to various recording studios, and then using Fedex to send the proceeds to mailbox drops in vacuum sealed bags on the West coast.

Last week, prosecutors charged Jimmy Henchman with possession of machine guns and silencers, after the weapons were turned up during a raid of one of his properties, as part of an investigation that began in 2008.

Rosemond, who pleaded not guilty to all charges, is facing a life sentence if he is convicted on the drug and gun charges.

The Brecksville woman who hurt innocent children at a park was sentenced to three years in prison on Wednesday.

On May 11th, 22-year-old Laura Molnar burned a 4-year-old on the forehead with a lit cigarette. On May 25th, Molnar pepper sprayed two 4-year-old children in the face at the Community Center located at One Community Drive in Brecksville.

The victims from the community center were treated for their injuries.

A search warrant was executed at her residence and police seized the pepper spray and miscellaneous drug abuse instruments.
