Shout out to the women I’ve seen out on the streets claiming to be grown but behaving less like their age and more like their shoe size (Heeey Prince!). We all have our less than pristine days where we come back in the house knowing we acted a fool, but if that’s your everyday, then this list was written for you, boo boo.

You’re Still Trying to Fight Folks

Who doesn’t go somewhere from time to time, have a run in with an immature chick and want to backhand them for talking and looking at you crazy? Been there, but I haven’t done that. Just because someone tests your nerves or is feeling froggy doesn’t mean you have to always be ready to jump. And don’t try and bring your girls into the messy mix when things go bad, because your drama, especially the kind that involves reckless violence, should involve and be handled by you and no one else. However, if someone makes the dumb decision to put their hands on you for no reason…well, a “lady” has to do what she’s got to do. But otherwise, be the bigger person and walk away from foolishness and a black eye that can be avoided.

You Keep Going for the SAME Kind of No-Good Dude

It’s crazy how folks don’t want to listen to the people who have their best interests at heart when it comes to no-good men, but they want you to listen to them when they come around crying all the damn time about him. And while you might think it’s cute to go on your Facebook rants about how “You ‘aint worried about him,” and that “I”M DOING ME!” you find yourself back with that fool, or a guy that’s his prototype: he doesn’t treat you right, he’s low-key cheating–he’s pretty much the guy from our NOT a “grown a** man” list. If you keep falling for the same kind of guy or the same kind of foolishness, then you’re no longer falling, but you’re voluntarily walking into a disaster. Do better.

Your Temper is on Level 100

So somebody stepped on your foot on accident, or took the seat you wanted on the train. Sucks right? You can be a bit pissy about it, but if you go on psycho mode immediately and have a response that’s filled with rage and foolishness, it’s clear you’re a big ‘ol crybaby having a temper tantrum. Like the woman with a stroller who had a seat taken from her that she wanted and decided to curse and pepper spray said seat-taker (then fought while the stroller rolled OUT of the train) this type of lady gets bent out of shape over the most inconsequential stuff and can end up messing up everybody’s day. Get a grip, some anger management and grow up already. Life’s going to get hard, but there’s no need to have a Mo’Nique inPrecious type of response to everything.

You Spend Money On Things You Don’t Need and Wonder Why You’re Broke

I know this chick can’t wait to get her income tax return. She’s going to lose her ever-loving mind. The reckless spender buys a new pair of shoes or a bag just because, but puts it on the credit card that’s almost at it’s max while making minimum payments every month. We all want to ball until we fall, but not everyone has it like that. Start jazzing up what’s in your closet and doing your own personal maintenance and stop looking for an excuse to buy a new dress, the most expensive hair, to get your nails done every other week and to cop knockoff designer bags from the dude ripping you off on Canal Street. Treat yourself occasionally dear, not daily.

You Drop Your Kids Off With Other People Regularly

I think I’ve noted this in a story or two before, but it never hurts to break it down further. While there are a great deal of women out there who skip the clubs and all the big fun to stay in and be with their kiddies, there are too many people who don’t. Just because you had a child doesn’t automatically make you grown, especially when your mother, your sister, your aunt and everyone but you is seeing them, feeding them and more. And please don’t be one of those women that passes your child to other people on the regular so you can go everywhere but to work, but because you’re not getting along with the child’s father, he’s the one person not allowed to see the kid. That’s not cool and that’s not grown up behavior.

You’re Still Getting Caught Up in the Group or Mob Mentality

If you’re out of college by now and still can’t seem to think for yourself, you’re not a grown a** woman. You can’t be. Not with that crew of obnoxiously loud chicks on the train cackling about the guy you dissed yesterday in surround sound. This also goes for the gal that gets with her friends and talks dirty about people she doesn’t know because that’s what her girlfriends are doing: “Girl, look at her hair!” If you were still in high school trying to get to third period before the bell sounded it might be understandable, but you’re too grown to be disrupting peace and quiet and then saying, “Girl, I don’t care!” Mature. Real mature.

You Deal With Things in a Passive Aggressive Manner

It’s okay to be mad about something and to let your feelings be known in a calm manner. By all means girl, go ahead. But the problem is when you express your feelings about something that happened so long ago, you can barely remember the details–and neither can the person you’re peeved at. You got beef? It’s always the best idea to let someone know immediately that they hurt your feelings or did you wrong. Wait too long to open your mouth about it and you come off petty, and sadly, you probably won’t get any sympathy for that ish that happened like five years ago.

Your Focus When It Comes to Dating Is Based Around What Someone Else Has

If someone asks this chick what she’s looking for in a man, money seems to be the root of all her answers. He needs to have this, she needs to be well taken care of of, blah, blah, blah. Money is great, but if you’re quick to diss or won’t date a guy who can’t take baths in money because he had to pay bills and is trying to make it just like you, then that’s a mess. You should want a man who is financially stable or at least on his way to being that way, but does he really have to be rolling in cash for you to give a guy the time of day? We are all entitled to our preferences, but if a man’s shoes send the “broke” signal to your brain and you diss him immediately–that’s not fair. Get your own money, honey!

10. You’ve forgotten your ex

More often than not, a breakup is followed by a significant amount of time spent thinking about your ex and wondering whether or not you made the right decision in going your separate ways. Depending on how long the two of you were together, these doubts can resurface again and again.

Ever since you met this new one, however, the thought of getting back together with your ex is the furthest thing from your mind. Come to think of it, you barely recall what you found so great about her in the first place.

9. You can’t stop thinking about her

Instead, you are consumed by thoughts of her. She just pops into your head for no apparent reason, and you wonder if she thinks of you half as much as you think of her. You wonder what she’s up to and even consider calling her (but refrain from doing so for fear of looking overeager).

But it gets worse. You’re out with your friends and you see something in a shop window and think about how much she would like that particular item, or you notice a poster for a show that she would love, but normally wouldn’t even have looked twice at it.

If she’s the last thing on your mind before you go to sleep and the first thing on your mind when you wake up — and you’ve even dreamed of her on a couple of occasions — then you don’t really even need to read on to know if you’re in love (but should anyway, just to be sure).

8. You care about her

There is a reason why you don’t really want to know too much about the chick you had a one-night stand with: You don’t love her. When you’re in love with a woman, you want to know all about her: who she is, what she thinks, what makes her laugh. You truly care about her and her feelings.

If you truly love a woman, you feel bad if she had a bad day or is upset about something. You don’t try to cheer her up because you have to, but because you can’t help it.

7. You find her quirks charming

The fact that she carries her passport with her everywhere she goes — just in case — and that, when she’s eating, she can’t help but construct every forkful so that it’s the perfect blend of ingredients fills you with an inexplicable feeling of happiness.

She does and says things that make her different, and you like it. You can’t quite put your finger on why, but it doesn’t even matter. You like her just the way she is.

6. You have great chemistry

You can’t be in love with someone that you have no chemistry with. If you seem to always be on the same wavelength, and think in similar ways, that’s a great sign. If you also generate enough heat to set off a five-alarm fire bell, then she is probably someone that you could fall in love with, if you aren’t there already.

5. You don’t notice other women as much

Did you see that gorgeous blonde that just walked by? What do you mean, “no”?!?

Although you can’t help noticing a beautiful woman when one walks by, when you’re in love, some of them tend to slip under the radar, while others just pale in comparison to her. Furthermore, you don’t seem to be flirting half as much as you used to.

You are slowly realizing that she’s often the only woman in the room that matters, and for some reason that suits you just fine.

4. You love spending time with her

This one is pretty obvious but important nonetheless. You look forward to seeing her, and don’t care much about what the two of you will be doing. Lately, just going for a walk with her sounds like the best way you could possibly spend an evening.

Furthermore, when you’re not together, you miss her and wish you were spending time together.

3. You don’t mind compromising sometimes

There was a time when it was your way or the highway, but with her it’s different. Not that she asks you to, but you don’t mind missing a night out with the guys to be with her. And you find yourself trying to incorporate her into your plans or altering them to accommodate her.

You also find yourself not putting up a fight when she wants to go to Shakespeare in the Park. Although your friends find this very amusing, you know that deep down, they wish that they had found a love like yours.

2. Other priorities take a back seat

You used to train religiously, but lately, if she’s free for dinner, you don’t mind missing a workout. Not only that, but your workaholic tendency of bringing home your work on weekends to get ahead seems a bit excessive to you as of late.

Your ever-important “to do” list seems quite stagnant these days, as being with her always manages to render your other plans and obligations obsolete. What was it that you absolutely had to do by four o’clock again?

1. You start thinking about the future and she’s in it

It used to be that the future with a woman meant your date on Saturday night, but with this woman, the future seems infinite. Not only do you plan to see her this weekend, but you want to see her a year from now as well.

When planning your next vacation, you know you want to spend it with her, and not a random beach bunny you happen to meet while you’re there. And when you get an invitation to a wedding that takes place three months from now, you ask her to be your date without thinking that it’s too far away to tell if you’ll still be together.

As long as you don’t share funds, your boyfriend doesn’t need to know where your dough goes. It stresses out guys to see you buy things they deem unnecessary — like clothes or shoes. The quick fix: When he compliments a dress, don’t give him the rundown on where you got it and how much it cost. And if he asks, tell him it was waaay less than the big-screen TV he splurged on.

The Way You Feel About His Family
Warning: Dissing his clan will do damage to your relationship. So even if his mom is Queen Bitch, keep your mouth shut. We all Love Etta James and there are quite a few things we can learn from the legendary queen. What we can learn from the queen is the love she inspired. What the love songs of Etta James can teach us about the beginning, the ending, and keeping relationships.

Etta James, known as the Matriarch of R&B, died today at the age of 73 after a long battle with leukemia. She’s survived by her husband of 41 years, two sons, and all of us who fall in and out of love to her music.

I fell in love with Etta James and my high school sweetheart, Greg, at the same time. Greg and I would drive around our respective small towns blasting “At Last,” like it was a rap song. Etta James’ music was beautiful and romantic. More than anything, I was struck by its universality. Even then, I knew that not everyone shares the same expectations or outcomes in love. But every love is the same in a few ways. It works until it doesn’t. It doesn’t work until it does. Even if you’re lucky to share 41 years with someone, something ends the streak. There’s beauty in endings and beginnings.

I eventually broke my high school sweetheart’s heart… or maybe he broke mine. But Etta James never left me. Her music taught me about the elation and grief of love. Here are the five biggest lessons I learned from her songs:

1) “I want a Sunday kind of love.”

In “A Sunday Kind of Love,” Etta James praises the everyday kind of love that “lasts past Saturday night.” This isn’t love in the best lighting or at its most novel. It’s the kind of enduring love that’s around when you’re low. Or when it’s Monday. Or when you’ve been together so long that it’s not a discussion of love at first sight. It’s just love at every special or unspecial moment.

2) “All I could do was cry.”

Etta James is at a wedding with the man she loves… watching him get married to someone else. In “All I Could Do Was Cry,” she does just that. She shows up and owns her feelings, presumably keeping them to herself (and then sharing them in a song). James doesn’t try to get in the way of what’s happening. She’s not going to plead for the one that got away to love her. Who wants to bargain for someone’s heart anyway?

3) “We can get along…if only you trust in me.”

Unlike many songs that came out at the time, “Trust in Me” isn’t about what Etta James seeks from her partner. It’s about what she brings to the table as an emotional equal. She urges her love to “come to me when things go wrong. Cling to me, daddy, and I’ll be strong.” Don’t ask what your man can do for you. Tell your man what you can do for him.

4) “I found a dream that I could speak to.”

“At Last” isn’t just about finding the One. It’s about realizing that if you’re patient and sincerely want something to happen, it can happen. This is why the song’s perfect for a wedding or the inauguration of our first black president. Dreams do become a reality. It just takes time.

5) “I want you to be true, and I just wanna make love to you.”

You can be coy about what you want in a relationship and in the bedroom, or you can follow the example of Etta James. In “I Just Wanna Make Love to You,” she tells her lover what she wants (to make love, for him to commit) and what she doesn’t (to control him). James is traditional when she expresses the desire to cook and clean up after him. But she’s going to speak her mind and get hers, too.

Granted, I know that sometimes life can get it the way, and if he’s working late on that big project with the looming deadline it’s possible that time might get away from him once in a while. But if this happens more than once or twice, it’s a sure sign that you’re just not a priority for him right now. If a guy is really interested in starting (or continuing) a real relationship with you, you will be on his mind, and he won’t forget to call.

People already know that there has been a longer than usual “flaunt my new boo” parade over the past few weeks from the likes of J.Lo and Marc Anthony, Zoë Saldana, and now even Miss Halle Berry. New love is exhilarating indeed, however these folks all have something in common, they may have recently separated, divorced or are going through the motions to seal the deal. I do wish their crazy beautiful behinds well, but I couldn’t help but think that perhaps some of these new relationships probably surfaced a little too soon- I know I’m not alone!

Now, I don’t believe that one should avoid a rebound relationship, but I do believe this is the perfect opportunity to re-establish personal boundaries. Let’s be real, it doesn’t matter how long your downtime is, when you begin dating again the first relationship will most likely be the rebound or transitional in some aspects.

Here are some tips to remember when in a rebound relationship:

•Keep it light and easy: You just emerged from a tsunami, try your best to take it slow. Plan public and fun-filled dates with gaps in between the time you spend together.
•This is not the best you’ve ever had (Drake): Well not yet anyway! It’s common in these situations to fool your heart and mind into thinking that the rebound is the realness you’ve been searching for. Remember rebound relationships are the munchies of the relationship world, with pangs of hunger coming from your heart. The best relationship you can ever have is with yourself; ideally all others should be developed overtime based on that prototype. #marinateonthat
•Commitment Is A Pacifier: In rebound relationships, it’s more likely that you will commit or have the desire to commit a lot faster than you would in a non-rebound relationship. Commitment without knowing who you and what you are committing to is most likely going to set you a few steps back in the long run.
How soon is too soon? That’s a good question! There have been some who have sporadically two-stepped from heart break into a happily ever after without blinking, and others who are knee deep in down time unable to get the confidence to begin dating again. So, how does one know what’s right for them?

I think that if you have a need to prove something to your ex, others or have unresolved feelings of anger about what happened than it’s probably way too soon to be committing to anyone or anything but your healing.

1. If he says to you ‘I only want to be with you,” pay attention. The question that should come to mind is, ‘Well, who else? Who else would you want to be with? Why am I the only one?’ What does that even mean?

2. He says, ‘I want you to have my baby.’ Trust me, that very often is said in the passion of the moment and he means it in the moment but it’s not going to be the way he feels the next day.

3. He’s NOT affectionate and/or if you’re kissing and he’s kissing you back but you find his eyes are open and he’s looking around, you should know that’s a sign to consider.

4. He makes AND breaks promises. If he’s always promising you, ‘We’re going to go out’ or ‘We’re going to meet my family’,  but it doesn’t happen, there’s a reason he’s not keeping the promises.

5. He always talks about the future, but the future never comes. It’s about what’s going to happen, what’s always ahead…but you’re left dealing with what DIDN’T happen. Bottom line: If you find you’re waiting for something more to happen between the two of you and the only thing that seems to be happening is that you’re having great sex, he may be faking the LOVING PART. You may want to start paying attention to that so that you don’t wind up feeling left out of the rest of his life and not being able to bring him into your life in a more complete way.

it’s a New Year and if you are reading this, you are blessed to have made it to 2012. Some of us welcomed in the New Year with a kiss from our beloved, some of us with champagne toasts and glittery accessories but a handful of us brought in the New Year miserable. We do it every year, we manage to cut off or be cut off by that someone who we were kickin’ it with and end up in the same emotional state we were in prior to this person entering our lives.

Here are a few pointers that will help you ease into your next romantic encounter with a little more emotionally-sound ammo, the rest of the story is written by you.

Here are 5 bad relationship habits to cut out in 2012:

1. Making Assumptions: Admittedly I’m an over thinker. I will spin a story so real in my head that I have to question my sanity at times. For the sake of your romantic future, ask questions, and leave estimations up to scientists.
2. Believing You Are Not Worthy of Love: I’m amazed at how many women are still “ok” with settling for half-assed relationships. Know your worth, and save yourself the heartache by knowing when to exit an experience that is not bringing out the best in you.
3. Comparing Your Experience to Your Friends’ Relationships: So you’re the last in the crew to get chose. Girl please,  allow your friend’s big news to enhance your outlook on love and not be step by step instructions or a threat to your individual love experience.
4. Sabotaging Your Potential for Love: I am the pickiest mofo on earth but I can tell you that every one of my shallow “must-haves” have gone out the window with my current beau. Focus on shared values being the deciding factor as opposed to the “Disney Land” idea of the “perfect mate”.
5. Lying To Yourself: Just like we set goals for our careers I always encourage my people to set goals for love. Many relationships fail to move past a certain stage because both parties have no idea what they really want or they do but have conflicting views of what the relationship should be. Are you looking for a commitment? Is light and casual working for you? Are you interested in serial dating? State your intentions and be about it, avoid getting caught up with partners who have snake charmed their way into your heart but have no desire for a commitment- That’s some 2011 bull!

I’m excited for this year and all of you. I know for a fact that whether or not you have found love, you want to enhance your experience as well as become stronger in your ability to give and receive it.
