So, it’s the first of the month of February and you know what means don’t you? It’s Black History Month! Say it loud: “I’m black and I’m proud!” “Black is beautiful!”

You get it.

People who know me know that I love this month, love giving out daily black history facts and watching documentaries on black people; Everyone has their own way of celebrating the month, whether loud or subtly, and it always makes me smile. So after putting a post up on my social media about the fabulous Phylicia Rashad’s achievements at 12 a.m. on the dot, I was kind of confused to learn through the gossip mill 15 minutes later thatRihanna spent $160,000 on a Swarovski crystal-adorned portrait of Marilyn Monroe. Oh..that’s cool…I guess. But I’m saying, my niece could have drawn one for her and bedecked it in macaroni for the low low. But anyway…

Then, this morning while looking through my e-mail, I was asked to view a new music video by new FemmeC (female lyricist) Brianna Perry called of all things, “Marilyn Monroe.” In the video, the black female rapper has long a long blonde lace front, and in a few scenes has a fake Marilyn Monroe beauty mark above her lip and by her cheek. In the hook she refers to herself as Marilyn (“I’m Hollyhood, arrogant, don’t I look good? Marilyn…Monroe”). Sure, the tune was cute, but all I could think was—Marilyn, again? Creeeeeeepy.

No disrespect to Marilyn whatsoever. She was a beautiful woman who I’m sure brought a lot of light and joy to people’s lives and maybe even taught folks to be comfortable with their curves. Kudos, kudos. However, I don’t understand why so many black women seem to be enamored with her these days. It’s 2012, right? But psych my mind, because so many celebrities get dressed up like her on the cover of magazines and in music videos to try to emulate her sex appeal and aura (I’ve seen Nicki Minaj, Amber Rose, Rihanna, and Jennifer Lopez don the same wig that looks exactly like Monroe’s hair in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”), buy portraits of her face and shout her out in their tracks. Aside from being a bombshell though, in all honesty, she didn’t do all that much over-the-top honorable and monumental stuff for black women. In fact, she was said to have done some less than awe-inducing things in her time that I won’t bring out (because we’ve all heard the allegations before), but what exactly did she do that warrants adoration of her more than a Lena Horne, a Dorothy Dandridge, a Josephine Baker, a Dr. Mae Jemison, a Nina Simone, a Joyce Bryant (since folks love to call her the “black Marilyn Monroe”), a Judith Jamison, a Ruby Dee and the likes of such iconic black women gone and still amongst us? Yet and still, folks like Mariah Carey, Kelly Rowland, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and more have shouted her out and emulated her like she was Harriet Tubman setting us free or something. Maybe I just missed the memo?

Not to bring anybody down, but I’m sour about the idea that some of our sistas might know more about Monroe than they do a Rosa Parks or Lorraine Hansberry or any of the other black women I mentioned earlier who opened so many doors for us. I went to high school with creative chicks who had purses with Marilyn’s face emblazoned on it, and bought products with her likeness just to keep up with the oh-so popular jones: loving and acting like you personally knew celebrities who have been gone for years–decades sometimes. She’s cool and all, but I think that with all the wonderful and talented women we have in black culture from the past and the present, we need to jump off the Marilyn bandwagon and start giving love to and emulating the people who look like us (and stop trying to look like her) and gave so much so that we could freely sit wherever on buses, have the chance to be famous singers and actresses and walk through integrated halls pretending that Marilyn Monroe is the end-all, be-all. Just saying.

Rihanna and Drake together, results in great music, hence the hits: “What’s My Name,” and “Take Care.” Now the friends are headlining the Barclaycard Wireless Festival in the U.K. together.

Drizzy will close out the show on July 7, while Rihanna rocks out the next day! Wiz Khalifa and J. Cole will also be hitting the stage.

MediaTakeOut.com was IN THE BUILDING on Saturday night when Rihanna made an impromptu appearance at Club 1835 lin Hollywood. The club promoters tried to play Rihanna’s music when she walked in, but Rih told them that on Saturday – she wanted to hear nothing but some hood music and said “Please play Meek Mills – Im A boss”.

She pretty much took over the Dj’s spot the rest of the night.

Another One Is Pregnant From “Love & Hip Hop’s?” Guess Who?

Rihanna just won’t stop, and I’m not mad at her! Now she can add “executive producer” to her long resume.

As if being the face of Armani Jeans along with Emporio Armani underwear and being styled by fashion giants such a Jean Paul Gaultier to Stella McCartney wasn’t enough, Rihanna is now an Executive Producer of a reality show.

So with her style star soaring high, Rihanna has inked a deal with UK’s Sky Living Network to executive produce a Project Runway-esque reality show. Although the program isn’t a titled yet, it’s set to hit the UK small screen this summer (no word if we’ll be able to view the show in the states, but there’s always YouTube.)

“I’ve always had a great love of fashion. It’s a constant source of inspiration in my life, and is a big reason why I’ve grown into the person and artist I am today,” Rihanna told Sky Living.

The show will follow the superstar as she travels Britain in search of talented and undiscovered fashion designers. Nicola Roberts, of the London based pop group Girls Aloud, was tapped by Rihanna to serve as the show’s host who will take the hand-picked group for designers through a series of challenges to determine an ultimate winner.

The prize? The opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind outfit for Rihanna to perform in during the Wireless Festival at London’s Hyde Park this July.

Rihanna’s always known as being a bit of a rock star, living recklessly, so her gangster tattoo isn’t really that much of a shocker, but it’s still perplexing. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons why Rihanna just might be living that “Thug Life.”

1. Through The Smoke

“Kush rolled, glass full…” Rihanna certainly does prefer the better things. The Bajan beauty was spotted in Hawaii getting her puff puff pass on. Hey, to each her own, but why in public Rihanna? Oh, because she’s a thug.

2. What’s Yours Is Mine

Rihanna will never take her claws out of R&B crooner, Chris Brown. Rumor has it that while partying it up recently at the same nightclub, Rihanna and Karrueche got into a little argument and had to be separated by Rihanna’s security. One thing about thugs–once theirs, always theirs.

3. Talk That Talk, Walk That Walk

Rihanna’s Twitter is often the topic of conversation and one thing I’ll always love about her is that she can tell it like it is. That’s pure thuggery. Now do you see why she put “Thug Life” on her knuckles?

In one photo, it shows the letters of “THUG LIFE” on each of her knuckles, much like the slain rapper, but in white ink. She wrote: “♫ All these b*tches screaming that 2pac back ♫ #THUGLIFE” (see right)

And in another photo, she is laying down and holding a beer, appearing to be getting a tat on her backside like she did in her “We Found Love” video. She even made reference to it, writing: “Tat my f**kin name on u girl so I know its real!!! #MINE” (see in gallery below)

Chris Brown and Rihanna almost got into ANOTHER FRACAS last night at LA hot spot Graystone Manor. But this time Chris had NOTHING TO DO WITH IT!!!

According to a person CLOSE TO RIHANNA . . . Rih and Chris’ GF Karrueche nearly GOT IT POPPIN in the club!!

Here’s what we know. For weeks, pop superstar RIHANNA has been telling people close to her that she is UPSET with Chris’ new GF Karrauche – for making a DISPARAGING YouTube video, where Kae MADE FUN of Rihanna’s accent.

And Kae, we’re told, is also upset with Rihanna – for her BLATANT SHOTS at Chris Brown in her newest video. She also believes that Rihanna WOULD LIKE to get back with Chris Brown.

Well last night, the two ladies GOT IN EACH OTHERS FACES at an LA club. Tells an insider, “[Chris and Kae] were on one side of the VIP and Rihanna was on the other. At one point Rihanna walked over, and Kae stepped to her.”

But before anything could truly POP OFF, Rihanna’s bodyguards came to her rescue, and moved Kae and her girls AWAY from RIH!!!

And that was GOOD for Kae. Cause according to our snitch, Rihanna was prepared to WHOOP KARRAUCHE’S AZZ!!

Critics of Rihanna might argue that this attributes to her “Good Girl Gone Bad” image which is only in addition to her drinking, short-lasting relationships and sometimes vulgar language. Of all the Rihannaisms that occur on a day to day basis, smoking weed should be the least of our concerns!

5. It distracts her from liquor

Rihanna has been known to go on a few drunken rants brought to our attention via Twitter. The singer has been seen stumbling out of restaurants and taking shots on stage. 4. She isn’t smoking cigarettes…

Cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 chemical compounds; 200 of which are known to be poisonous, and upwards of 60 have been identified as carcinogens.

Marijuana is the herbal form of cannabis, and comprises the flowers, the subtending leaves, and the stalks of mature, pistillate female plants; hashish is the resinous, concentrated form of cannabis.
