Wasalu Muhammad Jaco -better known as Lupe Fiasco, released his third album “Lasers”  on March 8, 2011.  The Chicago natives sound has always been very different.  He separates himself from other rap artists with his fearlessness to be himself and deep lyrics.  When I first heard a Lupe Fiasco song I’m pretty sure it was “kick push“.  I judged him from that song primarily as a slightly rebellious poetic individual with his own mind.  His older stuff was well written and thoughtful.

Let us discuss Lasers now.  When I first heard that Lupe was coming out with a new album I was excited but nervous for him.  I was wondering what he could possibly do after being out of the game for such a long period of time.  I didn’t know if he would come out with a new sound or just tweak the one he had before.  After listening, I came to the conclusion that he did come up with a new sound.  He kept the poetic man we love but also introduced us to Lupe version 2011.

As you may or may not know, Lupe went through some ridiculous stuff with his label about this album.  He has had a rough year.  In an interview Lupe said “I was super-depressed, lightly suicidal, at moments medium suicidal – and if not suicidal, willing to just walk away from it all completely.”  He is not afraid to tell us how he felt at that moment and this shows more in his music.

I feel like he has had so much pressure on having to juggle being commercial vs. being who he truly wants to be as an artist.  The “Kick Push” Lupe would never want to be commercial.  Lupe is deep, lyrical, intelligent, wise, etc. He is the type of artist who has so much creative ability, that if he had the chance to do exactly what he wanted, he would blossom into something even more beautiful. Lupe is top 5 in my book. I understand where he is coming from.  I feel the passion in his music.

I would love to know how you feel about Lasers.  Drop a comment, let me know if you agree/disagree!
