No, they’re not taking reservations for the bathroom.

In fact, Mildred’s Temple Kitchen, the Liberty Village restaurant that invited diners to have Valentine’s Day sex in its unisex washrooms, would rather we forget all about the offer.

“It was just meant to be a joke,” said Laurie Hall, whose PR firm Flex is promoting Mildred’s Weekend of Big Love. The promotion includes aphrodisiac menu items and an optional set of furry handcuffs.

Whether a joke taken too far or a move of public-relations genius, Mildred’s cheeky invitation has generated worldwide attention. It’s been blogged on the right-wing Drudge Report and the left-leaning Huffington Post, proving that sex appeals to readers of every inclination. Celebrity bloggers Perez Hilton and Alyssa Milano have also weighed in.

Reservations are available. (According to the Open Table website, spots are available at 10 and 10:30 p.m.) There is also space during the current Winterlicious citywide restaurant promotion for both the $20 lunch and $35 early dinners.

“We were kidding!” Tweeted Mildred’s chef and co-owner Donna Dooher. “That being said, we won’t stop our guests from having some fun behind closed doors!”

Not everyone finds it funny. Hall reports that a few diners have called to cancel reservations. Toronto Star readers, too, have expressed disgust and dismay.

“Brings a whole new meeting meaning to the idea of serving condiments… Or condom-mints,” emailed Shaunie Young of Toronto.

“Let’s just say that we won’t be going back there soon.”
