This just doesn’t make sense. An Atlanta woman is in legal trouble after leaving her small children in her apartment to go charge her cell phone.

A security officer was doing his rounds when he noticed that Shantonia Heard’s back door was open. He walked in to find a 6-year-old and 2-year-old alone and in the dark. They had been there for about 2 hours.

“The apartment was completely blacked out due to not having electricity,” the police report states. “As I walked to the rear of the apartment I noticed dog feces in one bedroom.” The kids were in the bedroom, and the oven was on with the door open. There was also a pit bull in the apartment.

(If you’re not from the hood, you turn the gas oven on and open the door when you don’t have heat; that way you heat up the apartment a little bit.)

And hour later, 22-year-old Heard came back home.  “Ms. Heard stated she went to her cousin’s house to charge her cell phone since her power was cut off,” the report states.

Heard was arrested and charged with cruelty to children. Her children were placed in child protective services custody, and the dog was placed in the care of Fulton County Animal Control, according to police. At a court appearance Wednesday, Heard’s charge was reduced to reckless conduct, a misdemeanor, and she was granted a $5,000 signature bond, a spokeswoman for the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office said. Her next court date is Nov. 14 at 9 a.m.
