Double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius was arrested earlier todayin connection to the shooting and killing of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, at his home in Pretoria, South Africa. Pistorius is a Paralympic champion and the first ever double-amputee to compete in an Olympic event.
Nicknamed the “Blade Runner,” Pistorius became a hero to both South Africans and disabled athletes the world over when he competed in the 2012 London Olympics, reaching the semifinals in the 400-meter and also running on South Africa’s 4×400 relay team.
Details of the shooting are sparse. Some have suggested Pistorius may have mistaken his girlfriend for a burglar, though authorities have yet to confirm those rumors. The sprinter reportedly owned several firearms to protect his house from intruders.
