Regina King talks with InStyle Magazine (March Issue) about her volunteer work.

‘Three years ago, Regina King’s 13-year-old son, Ian, began playing football for the Pasadena Panthers — a team within a nonprofit football and cheerleading league dedicated to empowering young people from all economic and ethnic backgrounds in their Southern California community. When the Southland actress heard that the team’s cheerleaders were in need of volunteer coaches, she raised her hand right away. “I know how to dance, and I’m an athletic person,” says King, who was a cheerleader in high school, if only for a week (she opted to devote herself to track). For several months a year, she trains and develops routines for 16 Pasadena Panthers cheerleaders between the ages of 10 and 14 — and attends games. “The most gratifying thing is when a girl says she can’t do something but then figures out that she can,” King says.
