Justine Sacco is…or was.. the Chief of PR at IAC, a company whose clients include Vimeo, Match.com, Urbanspoon and Ask.com. But after a tweet that included “going to Africa” and “getting AIDS,” she’s the one in need of PR now.
So it all started when Sacco boarded a flight to Africa and tweeted:
Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!
Why, oh why did she do that…
Almost immediately, Sacco became a trending topic, with hashtags #JessicaSacco and #HasJustineLandedYet trending worldwide. Everyone was anxiously waiting for her to see the mentions in her timeline, saying that it was taking way too long for her to respond, as a flight from London to Africa doesn’t take a day.
But once she landed, she deleted the tweet. Then, her twitter account @JustineSacco “was somehow deleted,” but then Sacco resurfaced on another account, @JustineSacco6 and is full of apologies. Some are skeptical that this is really her account, while others are glad she’s decided to apologize. Here’s where we are now:
First, she apologized (and is still apologizing).
But she still got fired.
So then she went into PR mode:
And more PR:
But that wasn’t working, so then she got scared.
And now she’s sad.
Buzzfeed has a hilarious article with even more offensive tweets from Justine Sacco, including one about sex with an autistic kid…?
I’m Dee Porter, and that’s the Word Eye Heard. How did she ever get a job in PR in the first place…?
