Kanye West celebrates the new year with his first song in over a year with ‘Only One.’ The touching Auto-Tuned ballad features lyrics dedicated to the rapper-producer’s daughter, North West.
Driven by a simple organ loop, played by legendary Beatle Paul McCartney, West goes back to his ’808s & Heartbreak’ steez, opting to croon and not rap on this outing.
On ‘Only One,’ Yeezy is more reflective and celebratory unlike his brash and boastful sensibilities on ‘Yeezus.’ His marriage to Kim Kardashian and the birth of their daughter seem to have affected his lyrical content.
Acknowledging the spirit of his mother looking down on him and the blessing of fatherhood, West crafts a lullaby to his baby girl.
“As I lay me down to sleep / I hear her speak to me / Hello ‘Mari, how ya doin’? / I think the storm ran out of rain, the clouds are movin’ / I know you’re happy, cause I can see it / So tell the voice inside ya’ head to believe it / I talked to God about you, he said he sent you an angel / And look at all that he gave you / You asked for one and you got two,” he sings.
Cradle music never sounded this good.
There may be more collaborations between West and McCartney in the future. Last year, the New York Post reported that the pair were working on a song called ‘Piss on My Grave.’ Hopefully, we will get a new album from West in 2015.
