The director sets a new benchmark for Black filmmakers.

With the success of Straight Outta Compton, F. Gary Gray is now the highest-grossing Black director for a single film in domestic sales.

VIBE reports that with the N.W.A film now bringing in $157.5 million in the United States and Canada, Gray has surpassed Keenen Ivory Wayans, who directed Scary Movie in 2000, and Tim Story, the director of 2005’s Fantastic Four.

Scary Movie earned $157 million its first year and Fantastic Four made $154.6 million.

Fantastic Four holds the title internationally, with $175.8 million dollars in revenue. Scary Movie follows with $121 million worldwide. Straight Outta Compton has brought in $24.9 million overseas.
