Former boxer and cultural icon, Muhammad Ali has issued a rare statement following Donald Trumps infamous comments calling for a ban on Muslim immigration.

“I am a Muslim and there is nothing Islamic about killing innocent people in Paris, San Bernardino, or anywhere else in the world. True Muslims know that the ruthless violence of so-called Islamic Jihadists goes against the very tenets of our religion,” Ali began.

“We as Muslims have to stand up to those who use Islam to advance their own personal agenda,” The Greatest continued. “They have alienated many from learning about Islam. True Muslims know or should know that it goes against our religion to try and force Islam on anybody.”

He also said, “Speaking as someone who has never been accused of political correctness, I believe that our political leaders should use their position to bring understanding about the religion of Islam and clarify that these misguided murderers have perverted people’s views on what Islam really is.”

Ali is apart of the growing list of people who have denounced Trump’s Islamophobia.

During a press conference with religious leaders earlier this week, Philadelphia mayor Micheal Nutter was asked to comment on Trump’s controversial statements and comment he did.

“He’s an asshole” said Nutter.

“I apologize Reverends [and] people of the religious community [but] how can I take seriously any foreign policy idea from someone like him? It’s impossible. He has no idea what he’s talking about.”

Nutter added, “[Trump’s comments] engenders a level of fear mongering that we have not seen literally since the 1930s and 1940s. He has taken a page from the playbook of Hitler, demonize a group, blame that group for a country’s problems and then seek to ban or eliminate that group as some kind of solution to a problem that does not exist. This is in fact a very dangerous form of American radicalization.”

Trump couldn’t wait to respond to Nutter’s comments with the tweet, “@Mayor_Nutter of Philadelphia, who is doing a terrible job, should be ashamed for using such a disgusting word in referring to me.Low life!”

Sigh. The saga continues.
