After a suspiciously long deliberation period, Bobby Shmurda has been sentenced to seven years of jail time.

Following a plea deal that allowed the rapper to serve far less than the 25 years he was originally charged with, he at least has something to be grateful for. After being denied bail numerous times over, Shmurda has ultimately pled guilty to conspiracy to possess weapons and possession of a weapon.

The 22-year-old rapper was originally arrested along with 15 other people in 2014 and charged with a handful of crimes including murder, attempted murder, and drug dealing. Suspicions about the validity of the case were prominent, with questions about the credibility of the arresting officers being raised almost immediately. Similarly, the NYPD used Shmurda’s music as evidence against him during the trial.

“I’m innocent,” said Shmurda back when the trial began. “I’ll explain it to all of them. I’m just a young black kid coming from a nasty neighborhood. I made it out, and a lot of people don’t want to see that.” It is not hard to think the police were making an example of the young artist.

Either way, at least Bobby will get credit for the 20 months he has already spent locked up. TMZ heard lawyers urging the other defendants to take similar deals considering they potentially faced lifelong sentences.
