Mobb Deep rapper Prodigy did a three-and-a-half year bid in jail from 2007 to 2011 after pleading guilty to weapons charges. He uses food as the lens to tell the story of his life in prison in his forthcoming book “Commissary Kitchen: My Infamous Prison Cookbook.”
“Prodigy decided to write ‘Commissary Kitchen’ upon his return from jail,” the book’s press release reads. “During the term, he lived in first person the many challenges that inmates have to face in an attempt to conduct a healthy lifestyle in prison, especially when living with a chronic and deadly disease like sickle cell. He realized what an enormous role food plays in his life.”
The book, which features a foreward by Eddie Huang, features a collection of recipes created by inmates using the meager ingredients available to them at the jail commissary. Prodigy shares anecdotes from prison, takes readers on a tour of his prison facility, and describes some of the characters who populate it.
