Surgical technologists assist in operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses or other surgical personnel. Their duties include setting up the operating room, preparing patients for surgery and preparing surgical equipment. During surgery, they may pass instruments and other supplies to surgeons and surgeon’s assistants, hold retractors, cut sutures and help manage surgical instruments and supplies. Surgical technologists typically work in hospitals or other outpatient surgical centers.
