The Surgical Technology Associate of Applied Science degree combines didactic instruction, hands-on training in the lab and clinical work to prepare students to work as entry-level surgical technicians. Healthcare curriculum for this program includes anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, microbiology, operating skills, surgical technology and surgical pharmacy. This program also includes general education courses to meet the requirements of an associate degree program including government, ethics, critical thinking, success strategies and written and oral communications. Prior to graduation, students complete an externship in a healthcare setting providing real-world work experience

Surgical technologists assist in operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses or other surgical personnel. Their duties include setting up the operating room, preparing patients for surgery and preparing surgical equipment. During surgery, they may pass instruments and other supplies to surgeons and surgeon’s assistants, hold retractors, cut sutures and help manage surgical instruments and supplies. Surgical technologists typically work in hospitals or other outpatient surgical centers. Demand for surgical technologists is growing faster than other career fields with demand for trained professionals expected to grow by 22% through 2022.1
