CLEVELAND — Two high schools and fifteen K-8 schools will close, and dozens of others will be re-purposed in a sweeping transformation plan for the Cleveland Schools announced tonight.
The announcement will likely mean many layoffs. The district hired consultants to review the academic performance of schools and also look at the capacity of buildings because there has been significant enrollment declines.
Here is the list of closing and re-structured Cleveland Public Schools.
The last time the Cleveland Schools closed buildings was in 2005 when a dozen were shut down to save money and deal with declining enrollment.
Two of the biggest closings, South High School and East High School came as a surprise to parents, students and Cleveland City Council members.
“Right now we’re left out of loop on every decision possible,” says Ward 7 Councilman TJ Dow, whose ward houses East High. “We are in the dark on everything. But we are not going to sit back idle and let them shut down East High School.”
As he plans to gather with community leaders, students at South High School are devising similar plans.
“It tears me apart that my school is on this list,” South Sophomore Sevon Blair told Channel 3. “I like this school a lot, and I’m going to try my best to keep it open.”
