What mixtapes are you favorite this year?  Have you been slacking on your mixtape updates and need some advice on which to download?  Never fear!  Here are the top 5 mixtapes in 2011, that YOU need to cop.

I have been wanting to put together a collection of my favorite mixtapes released in 2011. It seems to me that artists are producing better quality music on their mixtapes rather than the mainstream albums being released. I definitely had to narrow my choices down, seeing as how there are so many great mixtapes this year. After much thought I came to the conclusion that the winners are (drum roll please):

Number One.

The Weeknd: House Of Balloons

Let’s discuss my number one favorite mixtape, House Of Balloons.  If you didn’t already know, The Weeknd is one guy and he happens to be one of the most talented artists I have ever heard.  His style is so different, his music is chill and he really knows how to capture a feeling in a song.  When I first heard one of his songs I didn’t really give it a chance because I heard bad things about the whole “Odd Future” clan, but I soon came to realize that I shouldn’t knock it before I try it.  My favorite track on the mixtape is definitely “The Knowing“.  If you haven’t already downloaded House Of Balloons, get to it right now!

Number Two.

Ray Cash: Champagne Talk

Number two out of five on my wondrous list of mixtape glory happens to be “Champagne Talk” By Ray Cash.  Obviously we all remember him from his world renowned album “Cash On Delivery”, giving us memorable hits such as “Bumpin My Music” or “Sex Appeal”.  It has been awhile but Ray Cash is back in action and better than ever (in my opinion).  This mixtape is genius.  We all need a little street music in our lives and we can always count on Ray Cash to deliver.  I have had “throw it back”, “Crawlin” and “Top Off” on repeat for weeks.  This mixtape goes hard in my 99′ acura TL lol.

Number Three.

Frank Ocean- Nostalgia Ultra

Coming in at number three, is Frank Ocean’s “nostalgia, ULTRA”.  I cannot express how unique this guy is.  His music is perfect.  The industry absolutely needed an artist like him.  He brings something different to the table with his sultry voice, insanely melodic beats and ballsy lyrics. I can’t even choose my favorite song(s), all of them are amazing.  This one is a force to be reckoned with.  If you don’t have this mixtape in your itunes library, I demand that you get it.

Number Four

Stalley- Lincoln Way Nights

Stalley, Stalley, Stalley.  What…..a talent!  I am so excited about his success not only because he is from my hometown but because his music is such a movement.  He represents where he is from which makes up massilon-ites so proud.  He makes this crappy little town seem like the coolest place to be.  His music is truly “intelligent trunk music”.  The beats are ridiculous, the production is phenomenal and his lyrics are deep.  All of those components make for a genius mixtape.

Number Five.

Jhene Aiko- Sailing Souls

Last but definitely not least, Jhene Aiko’s Sailing Souls mixtape is absolutely phenomenal. Her sound is so complete and perfect. This girl can truly write.  Her lyrics are simple yet deep.  The concept for this mixtape is clear.  There aren’t many songs on it, but she was smart by doing that, because it leaves you wanting more.  My  favorite tracks which I replay over and over again have to be “Stranger” and “growing apart too”.

Hope you all enjoyed my top 5!

If you think that I missed out on any mixtapes that deserved to be on this list, comment and let me know!
