CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) –

Jurors have recommended the death penalty for convicted serial killer Anthony Sowell.

Sowell showed zero emotion as he learned he would be sent to death row for the mass murder of eleven women.

Jurors deliberated a total of seven hours before reaching a decision. Sowell will be officially sentenced Friday, August 12th at 9AM.

Sowell appeared in an orange prison jumpsuit for the first time since his trial began in June. He was also handcuffed.

The courtroom was packed with families of the victims. They broke out in applause when Sowell was taken from the courtroom.

Sowell was convicted of murdering eleven women and burying their bodies in and around his Imperial Avenue home last month.

Sowell took the stand in the death penalty phase of his trial Monday afternoon, and feebly apologized for his actions.
