Clearly the Ku Klux Klan doesn’t realize that their reputation precedes them. The racist organization is looking to adopt a Georgia highway, a move which is causing controversy in the state.
“The state of Georgia is absolutely shameful in even considering an application from the KKK,” Democratic Georgia State Representative, Tyrone Brooks, said in an interview with ABC news. “If the state will accept an application from the KKK, we may as well get ready to accept applications from the Nazi party, Taliban, Al Qaeda and Aryan Nation.”
On the contrary, the KKK believes that despite their despicable past, adopting the highway is their attempt at doing a good deed. “What we’re trying to do is something positive and this Tyrone Brooks is trying to raise a stink about it. We just want to do something good for the community,” the group’s “Imperial Wizard” explained. “[Brooks is] coming out and calling the Klan a terrorist organization. Prove it in black and white that the U.S. government has labeled us a terrorist organization,” he continued. “Prove it. He needs to prove it. I challenge him.”
Perhaps the “Imperial Wizard” is unaware of the racist history of the organization to which he belongs. Since its inception in the late 1800s, the Klan has preached its message of white supremacy at the cost of black lives. Aside from lynching and burning black people, bombing their homes and places of worship, members of the KKK are responsibility for the disappearance and murders of several victims.
“We’re not a hate group,” added April Chambers, secretary for the chapter hoping to adopt the highway. “We don’t hate anybody. We’re just white people that want to stick with white people. The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) wants to stick with black people. Just because I’m white, I can’t stick with my own group?”
Given their fledgling membership rate, which has dwindled from 4 million at its height to under 8,000 as of 2008, the group also kicked off a recruitment campaign in an Atlanta suburb, earlier this year.
