The Sisters of Charity Foundation of Cleveland views health as vital to supporting families, building stable neighborhoods and reducing poverty. For more than a decade, the Foundation has built strategic partnerships and made strategic investments to reduce health disparities and ensure all children have an opportunity to be healthy and thrive.

The Central Neighborhood, a community in the city of Cleveland is a special place in the eyes of the Foundation. So much so, that we have invested over $1.5 million dollars to support health and education programs, services, and community-building opportunities for the children and families that call Central home. Our investment of resources, we believe is helping the residents of Central transform their neighborhood and create opportunities for children and families to move out of poverty and making Central a neighborhood of promise and choice.

WE RUN THIS CITY YOUTH MARATHON – is a 14 week program that strives to teach young people to set and achieve goals by preparing them to run in the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon. Students in the 6th to 12th grades attending school at Marion-Sterling, Carl & Louis Stokes, Carver and E. Tech have the opportunity to participate in the program. During the 14 week program, the students train at the YMCA accumulating up to 25 miles in running.

On race day – held every May in downtown Cleveland, the students have the option of running 1.2 miles completing the full distance of a marathon race (26.2 miles) or challenging themselves even more by running the 10k, Half Marathon or Full Marathon on race day! This year, Z107.9FM’s own Latin Assassin was the honorary Team Captain and ran with the students. (pictured below)

HEALTHY FAMILY FUN DAY – was hosted for the first time in Central on June 2nd at the Outhwaite Community Center & Gymnasium. We hosted over 500 parents and children – engaging them in a fun filled day focused on raising healthy children and the importance of good nutrition and being active.

Children received goodie bags and participated in activities like urban gardening, healthy snack demonstrations, a reading circle, and got to see a special movie produced by Sesame Street called Food for Thought – featuring Elmo, the Super Foods and other loveable character.

Parents received valuable resources to help support their children’s development, including a FREE Sesame Street DVD, recipe cards and other resources. Did we mention that Elmo made a special appearance in Central that day!

These are just two examples of the many programs and events that are taking place in Central. If you are a resident, parent and youth living in Central we invite you to join us at our upcoming programs and events.

Our commitment to the children and families in Central is strong. We are grateful for the partnerships we share with the residents, schools, community-based organizations, faith-community, local leadership and many others that work in and support the Central neighborhood.
