Many R&B purist have been wondering what happened to the soul music from the days of the past. While she was still here, Amy Winehouse filled that void of retro soul instrumentation paired with contemporary cutting lyricism. Now that Amy Winehouse is gone, it’s up to the the young artists influenced by her and the soul of the sixties and seventies to keep that retro spirit alive.

Looking to help further the cause is a songstress from New Zealand named Aaradhna (pronounced Ah-radd-nah). After she began discovering Amy Winehouse’s works, Aarandhna began writing her own songs. Her first single to hit the United States is the dusty soul record “Wake Up.”

“Wake Up” is a song in the same lane as a Mark Ronson production separating itself in the vocal tone and lyrics. The lyrics find the singer pleading with herself to wake up and live the life she dreams of.

Take a listen to the song below. Does Aarandhna have potential to make a lasting impression on fickle soul music fans? Let us know your opinion below.
