New Rules. Jay-Z received a platinum plaque today (July 9) after a million sales with the help of Samsung from a lucrative deal that involved a million downloads for free. Samsung bought a million copies to hand away on a phone application for Samsung phones days before the original release date of the album. Not only did this change the rules of the game but it also made the RIAA rethink and change their policies of what could be recognized as an actual sale.
RIAA updated their rules after the unparalleled deal brokered by Jay-Z and Samsung brought light on the outdated procedure of how an album could receive a plaque with the rise of digital sales. Not only has Jay-Z changed the music industry standards of what does and doesn’t count as an actual sale but this could be the beginning of major corporations buying albums to enhance the advertisement of their product. Music may never be the same but in due time we shall see if this new marketing strategy changes the music industry.
