Beyonce2014Grammys3Russell Simmons attempted to defend Beyoncé against an attack by political commentator Bill O’Reilly who described her “Partition” music video as exploitative garbage.

“She puts out a new album with a video that glorifies having sex in the back of a limousine. Teenage girls look up to Beyoncé, particularly girls of color. She’s an idol to them,” Bill said. “Why on earth would this woman do that?”

Bill argued that Russell, Beyoncé and other entertainers have an “obligation to protect children, not put out exploitative garbage.”

“Why would she do it when she knows the devastation that unwanted pregnancies and fractured families…” he asked.

Though Russell wanted to talk about the benefits of meditation during the interview, Bill wanted the mogul to explain Beyoncé’s actions.

“I think the artists’ job, throughout history, has been to say things that people are inspired by,” Russell said. “When an artist expresses something that’s sexual in music, it’s a reflection of our reality.”

While Bill wanted to blame Beyoncé for negatively influencing girls and promoting promiscuous sex, Russell pointed out that it’s the parents’ job to make sure their children are exposed to positive images. However, Bill seemed particularly worried about minority children who lack strong parental guidance.
