Parents and supporters of the #BringBackOurGirls movement have been banned from demonstrating in Nigeria.

Boko Haram, a Nigerian armed group, has claimed responsibility in the abduction of more than 250 girls from a Chibok boarding school in April, which gained momentum internationally through the use of the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls.

Nigerian police have decided to ban protests in the capital city, Abuja. Noisy street demonstrations in Abuja have become a regular feature of the campaign to put pressure on the government and to keep the issue in the public eye. According to CNN, Joseph Mbu, Abuja Police Commissioner, said the on going protests pose a security threat to citizens in the capital city.

“Information reaching us is that too soon dangerous elements will join the groups under the guise of protest and detonate explosive(s) aimed at embarrassing the government. Accordingly protests on the Chibok Girls is hereby banned with immediate effect,” the commissioner said.
