Two reports commissioned by Cuyahoga County, Ohio prosecutor Timothy J. McGinty found that police officer Timothy Loehmann fatal shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice was “reasonable,” NBC News reports.
A grand jury will still determine if Loehmann will face criminal charges in Tamir’s death. McGinty claims that he released the reports in the interest of transparency.
“We are not reaching any conclusions from these reports,” Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy J. McGinty said in a statement. “The gathering of evidence continues and the grand jury will evaluate it all.”
McGinty said that additional reports have also been commissioned and the findings with also be released to the public.
As NewsOne previously reported, Tamir was playing with a toy gun on a playground when 911 was called. When Loehmann appeared on the scene, he gunned down Tamir in under three seconds.
A lawyer for Tamir’s family called the reports a “whitewash.”
“These supposed “experts” — all pro-police — dodge the simple fact that the officers rushed Tamir and shot him immediately without assessing the situation in the least,” Subodh Chandra said in a statement. “Reasonable jurors could find that conduct unreasonable.”
