Violent protests have flooded the streets of Charlotte, North Carolina, following the death of Keith Lamont Scott. And in the midst of these protests, Michael Jordan is asking for members of his home community to be calm.

“First, I want to express my condolences to the Scott family for their loss,” Jordan said in a statement released by his manager, Estee Portnoy. “I also wish for a full recovery to those who have been injured.”

The protests have spilled into violence as North Carolina Gov. Pat McCory declared a state of emergency on Wednesday night, and Jordan spoke to the violence in his statement.

“In light of the tragic events of the past three days, it is more important than ever that we restore calm and come together, as a community in peaceful demonstration and conversation, and in constructive and non-violent ways,” he said.
