The American Diabetes Association states that diabetes disproportionately affects Black adults with 18.7% of all African Americans in the U.S over 20 years of age being diagnosed with diabetes compared to 7.1% of non-Hispanic white Americans. Diabetes is a chronic health condition that impacts many parts of the body, including the feet via foot ulcers. If not treated properly, diabetic foot ulcers can lead to amputation. In today’s episode, Matty talks with Dr. Nelson about what diabetes is, how it impacts the feet and how Black Americans are disproportionally affected by the disease.
