A nationwide deportation of illegal immigrants has swept across the United States, but Cleveland’s mayor isn’t fully on board with how things are playing out.
Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb took a strong stance against the ICE raids happening in Ohio and across the country yesterday. He also explained that Cleveland will not be targeting or enforcing deportation of anyone not involved in violent crimes.

“I fully condemn the concentrated effort to threaten and terrify our most vulnerable populations,” said the mayor in a video. “Immigrants are human beings. They have elevated our home by contributing their talents and cultures here. They support our economy. They attend our churches. They are our neighbors. Immigrants have been integral to our city’s story for generations.”
Mayor Bibb’s statement comes less than a week after reports of an ICE raid taking place at a local Mexican restaurant in Cleveland Heights.
Joe Cimperman, the CEO of Global CLE, also commented on the raids.
“There is fear from people here without documents but also people who have been here for years,” said Cimperman. “We had a phone call from a woman who became a citizen last year and she asked if she would be deported”.
Rough estimates indicate that nearly 100,000 immigrants live in Cuyahoga County.
This is a developing story.
