Gilbert Arenas Blames Cybertruck Malfunction for Son’s Crash

Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas recently revealed that his son, 18-year-old USC basketball recruit Alijah Arenas, was involved in a serious car accident due to a malfunction in his Tesla Cybertruck’s steering system. The incident occurred in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley when the steering wheel reportedly went limp, causing Alijah to lose control and crash into a tree. The vehicle subsequently caught fire, trapping Alijah inside. He was rescued by a bystander and hospitalized for several days .
Gilbert Arenas expressed his gratitude for his son’s survival and ongoing recovery. He also issued a warning to other parents, advising them to equip their children’s vehicles with tools to break windows in emergencies, as the Cybertruck’s bulletproof windows prevented Alijah from escaping the burning vehicle .
This incident adds to a growing list of safety concerns surrounding Tesla’s Cybertruck. In March 2025, Tesla recalled over 46,000 Cybertrucks due to a defect where an exterior panel could detach, creating a road hazard . Additionally, nearly 4,000 2024 Cybertrucks were recalled because the accelerator pedal could become stuck, potentially causing unintended acceleration .
These recalls raise questions about the safety and reliability of Tesla’s vehicles. While the Cybertruck’s futuristic design and features have garnered attention, incidents like Alijah Arenas’ crash highlight the importance of vehicle safety and the need for thorough testing and quality control. Consumers and parents alike should exercise caution and stay informed about potential risks associated with new automotive technologies.
