The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s office says cocaine has now surpassed fentanyl as the drug most frequently involved in overdoses! This marks a significant shift in the regions ongoing overdose crisis. Health officials say this change comes after fentanyl-related overdose deaths dropped by roughly 70% (over the past 2 years), a sign that prevention and intervention efforts have in fact been making an impact! However, the crisis is far from over, as cocaine has become an increasingly deadly substance in NEOH. [Source]

So what is being done to bring awareness in the community?

Medical Examiner Dr. Thomas Gilson has announced the launch of SignsOfOD.org — a new public campaign aimed at helping people recognize the warning signs of an overdose and encourage safer practices for people who use. It’s good to remember that many fatal overdoses happen when people are alone, making it critical for friends and family to know when and how to respond.

While fentanyl continues to be a factor in drug overdose deaths, local health agencies are reporting a growing number of fatalities involving cocaine, due to it being unknowingly mixed with other dangerous substances. Public health experts continue to encourage residents to carry Naloxone, avoid using drugs alone, and of course to seek treatment if needed!
