San Francisco Boat Capsize: Tragic Memorial Trip
One Dead, Three Missing After Boat Capsizes Near Alcatraz During Trip to Memorial Service
A boating trip to a memorial service ended in tragedy after a vessel capsized near Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay.
According to authorities, the 49-foot cabin cruiser was carrying about 20 people when it encountered rough conditions and overturned Tuesday afternoon. One person has died, three others remain missing, and several passengers were rescued from the water.
Officials initially received reports that the boat may have caught fire, but investigators later said what witnesses saw was likely steam coming from the vessel’s engine. Authorities believe the boat took on water after being struck by rough waves before capsizing.
The victim was identified as 79-year-old Clifford Joseph Boisa. Three other people were hospitalized with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Officials also confirmed that a dog died in the incident.
The U.S. Coast Guard and local emergency crews continue searching for the missing passengers, while the San Francisco Police Department investigates what caused the accident.
Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy.
