The clip, shared by the league’s own social media accounts during All-Star Weekend, showed the two stars joking about a $400 bet on a matchup between the Atlanta Dream and Dallas Wings. After the video began circulating online, the WNBA removed the post. Then the league addressed the situation publicly.
In a statement, the league said the video was intended to be lighthearted entertainment. However, it acknowledged the clip was inappropriate given the WNBA’s strict policies prohibiting players from betting on league games. Officials said the post was removed shortly after it was published. Furthermore, they confirmed the matter was handled internally.
The league also emphasized that even jokes involving gambling can create confusion and send the wrong message. As a result, it plans to use the incident as a teaching moment. It will remind players and staff about league policies regarding sports wagering.
The original video showed Reese playfully flashing cash while joking about the upcoming game. Following Atlanta’s 82-81 victory, Reese continued the joke online. She teased that she would be requesting payment from Bueckers through Apple Pay.
Based on the league’s statement, neither player is expected to face discipline. The WNBA characterizes the situation as an unsuccessful attempt at humor rather than evidence of actual gambling activity.
