Master P Defends Slavery Comments Amid Backlash

Master P is clearing up what he says was a misunderstanding surrounding recent comments he made about slavery, history and moving the Black community forward financially.

The No Limit Records founder faced criticism after a clip from his interview with Forbes began circulating online. During the conversation, Master P said he believes constantly focusing on slavery and the past can contribute to a negative mindset.

Some people took those remarks as Master P suggesting Black Americans should simply forget about slavery and the lasting effects of systemic racism.

Master P says that wasn’t his message at all.

In a response posted online, he told critics not to create false narratives around his words. He explained that he loves his people and believes Black history and the sacrifices of previous generations should never be forgotten.

His larger point, he said, is about what can be done now to create a stronger financial future.

Master P Says His Focus Is Closing the Wealth Gap

Master P explained that while the past cannot be changed, the future can be impacted through financial literacy, ownership, entrepreneurship and efforts to close the racial wealth gap.

He also emphasized the importance of integrity and doing good business, arguing that those principles can create opportunities and open doors.

But his clarification hasn’t ended the debate.

Critics argue that slavery, Jim Crow, segregation and discriminatory government policies aren’t simply events from the past because their economic effects can still influence wealth disparities today. Others understood Master P’s argument as being less about forgetting history and more about putting greater energy into building wealth for future generations.

That difference has become the center of the conversation: Is focusing on history necessary to fix today’s wealth gap, or can too much focus on the past prevent people from moving forward?

Master P’s Message Has Long Focused on Ownership

The comments also line up with a message Master P has promoted throughout much of his career.

After growing up in New Orleans’ Calliope Projects, he turned No Limit Records into a successful independent music company. Later, he expanded into numerous businesses and philanthropic efforts.

For years, he has encouraged entrepreneurship, financial literacy and ownership within the Black community.

Now, Master P says his latest comments should be viewed through that same lens. He says: remember the past, but also build for the future.
