Uber Offers Real-Time Video Monitoring For Teen Rides

Uber’s teen live video feature now allows parents and guardians to watch their teen’s ride in real time as the company expands its safety tools for younger riders.

Uber introduced the feature through its Teen Accounts program, which lets teens request rides through an account connected to a parent or guardian.

When a teen starts a trip with a driver who has live video enabled, Uber sends the linked parent or guardian a notification. With one tap, the parent can open the app and watch the live video during the ride.

That means parents can do more than watch a car move across a map. They can actually see what’s happening during the trip.

How Uber’s Teen Live Video Works

Uber says the feature also includes privacy protections for both riders and drivers.

The company told PEOPLE that Uber itself cannot simply watch the live feed in real time. Uber encrypts and stores the recording on its servers, then automatically deletes it after 14 days unless someone includes the footage in a safety report or investigation.

Uber will also alert parents if connectivity problems interrupt the live stream.

One important detail: the feature only works when the Uber driver has live video enabled.

Cleveland Is One of the First Cities to Get It

Before Uber expands the feature nationwide, the company launched it in nine U.S. markets — and Cleveland made the list.

The initial markets include Atlanta, Phoenix, Orlando, Raleigh-Durham, Portland, San Antonio, Cleveland, Rhode Island and El Paso.

Uber says it plans to bring the feature to more areas across the country over the coming weeks.

For parents who already feel nervous about putting their teenager in a rideshare alone, this could provide another level of reassurance.
