Christina Milian Gets $4M Divorce Settlement
It wasn’t only just a dream, that marriage. So on to a settlement we go. Pop singer Christina Milian will indeed receive a big-time divorce settlement, just as FindLaw’s Celebrity Justice recently reported.
The singer was married to R&B producer/performer The Dream for just months, but will walk away with a substantial settlement that could last for many years. The couple has one child: a daughter, Violet.
Milian has focused on keeping the uglier details of the divorce out of the media for the sake of her daughter, reports AoL’s The BoomBox. The exact numbers reported by BoomBox and the Chicago Sun-Times are a lump sum settlement of $4 million and child support payments of $5,000 per month. The pay-back for this pay-out is that Milian may make no public comment regarding the not-so-dreamy Dream or their relationship.
Divorce settlements can be reached by litigation, or with an out-of-court agreement between the parties, like this one. A judge must still approve the settlement to ensure fairness to all parties.
Most states’ support laws as are based on The Uniform Marriage and Divorce Act. This law recommends that a judge look at various factors to determine if a settlement is reasonable. A judge may use considerations such as the age, physical condition, emotional state, and financial condition of the former spouses; the length of time the recipient would need for education or training to become self-sufficient; the couple’s standard of living during the marriage; the length of the marriage; and the ability of the payer spouse to support the recipient and still support himself or herself.
In this case, a star like Christina Milian is clearly self supporting, and the marriage was of (understatement) short duration, so the settlement was most likely based on considerations such as standard of living and The Dream’s preference to keep things quiet. That does sound reasonable.
Milian is now focused (as is every actor, politician and anyone else who takes a public pratfall these days) on moving on. “I’ve been regrouping with my life and everything that was going on,” Milian told The BoomBox. “I feel very confident, very sexy, alive. I feel responsible for a lot of things. I’m very thankful for being able to see the light and move forward in my life.”
