Since the show became an overnight hit, Scrappy said he has noticed an increase in fans, followers and financial gain.
“You’ve got more haters, that’s all,” Scrappy told SOHH when asked about the post-effects of stealing the spotlight in “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta.” “That’s all, that’s all I’ve seen. You’ve got more haters, you’ve got more fans and what I try to do is not get it mixed up between fans and followers. My fans are the ones that have been down with me even before ‘Love & Hip Hop’ and then you have the followers that are going to follow whatever is hot at the time. Then you gain new fans, so, it’s just a lot of these new people around that ain’t been around. Then you have a lot of new money that wasn’t getting made that’s getting made now.” (SOHH)
He also offered a take on why some hip-hop artists are resistant to sign off on reality television.
“I’m going to be honest with you, I don’t think [it’s rappers being less] camera shy, I just think there’s certain people that let it be known they are super thugs and they are super human and if they were to let people into their life and have them find out that they weren’t super, that they just like them, they probably wouldn’t feel them as much. Whatever they would try to put out there [on store shelves] wouldn’t work, you feel me? Only certain people can be loved for being real. Sometimes people are a little too real, get carried away and so you wouldn’t know.” (SOHH)
West Coast rapper Game recently hinted at what fans can anticipate from his upcoming family-based reality series.
“We got a good lil’ deal, we got d*mn near a mil, so that’s what really made me do it, it’s that wifey kept complaining about, you know, she’s a school teacher, she makes a good six figures but she wanted some more money, man, so she talked me into doing it and she got her money and didn’t really care about my end. She kept most of the money and left me with about $100 grand. She got about $900 [thousand]. So yeah, that’s how it happened.” (“Jenny Boom Boom TV”)
Last month, rapper-turned-actor Ice-T spoke to SOHH about America’s obsession with reality television.
“One thing about my [‘Ice Loves Coco’] show is we never showed the hype,” Ice told SOHH, defending his reality series’ content amongst its competition. “My show really isn’t about the hype, it’s more like ‘I Love Lucy’ more than anything. My show was an anti-reality show. It’s kind of like watching me play X-Box and some bullsh*t but everybody enjoyed it. The highlight of my show is getting some grease on my shirt from a sandwich. You know? So you don’t really need all that hype. If you’re quality, you don’t need to be throwing drinks at people’s faces and doing all that dumb stunt sh*t. You know? But the world is f*cked up right now. The world cares more about what b*tch is wearing a weave than how motherf*cking much the defense budget is.” (SOHH)
